I went to Urban Mattress in Vienna, Va. on the recommendation of this blog and tried a Dunlopillo Ambiance Luxury Firm, the firmest of this line. I liked it, though I thought could even be a fit firmer especially for my bigger husband who was not there. The price was $2099. I tried a pure latex mattress but didn’t like it.
Has anyone had any experience with this mattress, which I think is a new brand?
I also went to the Healthy Back store and tried the Pure Bliss latex and thought it was too soft. It was also $3000 but the salesperson said the price was negotiable. I felt like I was back in a souk overseas!
I forgot to ask what the layers were in the Dunlopillo as I might try to duplicate it at the American Foam Center with just a little more firmness. He might know what it is.
I need to drag my husband into this process and he is already balking. He doesn’t have much patience for this. He wanted to buy a Casper mattress online but they make one mattress with some memory foam on top and I refused.
Any suggestions?
Hi JFKinDC,
Dunlopillo is a brand name for latex mattresses that in North America is owned by Latex International (the same as Pure Latex Bliss). The first manufacturer to use it (see post #2 here).
The Dunlopillo mattresses at Urban Mattress would be made by Sherwood Bedding (see this article) using latex made by Latex International.
They should be able to provide you with the “quality specs” such as the type and blend of the layers in the mattress (see this article) … but they may not provide you with the “comfort specs” (such as ILD) since the ILD of the layers are not important to know when you are testing a mattress locally and aren’t relevant to the quality of the materials.
I would always make sure you are able to find out the specifics of the materials inside any mattress before you buy it so that you can identify any potential weak links in the design and make more meaningful comparisons with other mattresses.
I would also encourage you to make sure you test any mattress you are considering with both of you on the mattress (following the testing guidelines in the tutorial post) since a second person on the mattress can change how it feels to sleep on.
It may be an idea to suggest that if he can “sleep on anything” and doesn’t wish to be involved in buying something that will have a more significant effect on your overall wellbeing than almost anything else you will purchase in the next decade or so then perhaps the floor or the sofa would work well for him (just joking of course :))
