Factory Direct Mattress Manufactureers in Phoenix, AZ

Hi. We are in the process of looking at king size beds and came across your blog. We were leaning toward purchasing the iComfort bed because we like the feel at the store, but having read the information here we are now leaning toward latex. She prefers a firmer bed and I don’t really know which I prefer, but know I want something that helps to support my back. We both like the idea of not feeling the other move throughout the night. We would prefer a mattress that remains cool throughout the night also. So here are our stats…

Me: 6’2", 165lbs. – belly and side sleeper
Her: 5’5", 125llbs. - same

Who would you suggest for local dealers in Phoenix, AZ? Is there better place than Bedmart, Ashley Furniture, etc to try out our options?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Peanut,

I hope you don’t mind that I changed your post to a new thread to help others from Phoenix find the information more easily (there seem to be a few lately).

You are fortunate to live in Phoenix as there are some exceptionally high quality and value factory direct manufacturers there, 2 of which are members of this site. I also trust their advice and ability to help their customers find a mattress layering that is best for their needs and preferences.

Post #4 here should help a lot

You are both on the slim side so I would be looking for a comfort layer in the range of 2-3" and in an ILD that relieves pressure in your testing (since you have the ability to test locally this will be more accurate than theory). Typically an ILD in a latex comfort layer in the range of 19 - 24 would work well. Because both of you are also stomach sleepers … then the thinnest firmest layer that relieves any pressure points on your side would also be best for stomach sleeping since stomach sleeping typically does well with a much thinner comfort layer and a firm support layer to prevent the hips from sinking in and causing lower back pain due to sleeping in a swayback position.

So the options I would be looking at would be about 2" of 19 - 24 (towards the low end) latex over about a 28 ILD support core or 3" of 24 ILD latex over a slightly firmer support core (in the 30’s). If the support core has a middle and lower layer … then the lower layer can be even firmer. Pay particular attention when testing for pressure relief to do so while completely relaxed on your sides and make sure you don’t feel any pressure in your hips, pelvic crest, or shoulders. When you are testing for alignment, make sure you test on your stomach as well as side to make sure your hips aren’t sinking in too far on your stomach and your shoulders are sinking in far enough on your side. Again, the thinnest firmest comfort layer that is pressure relieving on your side and allows your shoulders to sink in enough would be best for your stomach sleeping.

If you find that your individual needs are too different … then a side by side split with each side customized to each of you is available from both of our members at no extra cost.

Also make sure that if you end up purchasing from either of them to let them know you are a member here (which is automatic with a post in the forum) as this entitles you to an additional 5% discount from any manufacturing member of the site.

Hope this helps, and I’d love to hear how you make out.

Phoenix

Phoenix,
First, thank you for the information. Second, just wandering what you sleep on. And 3rd, what price should we expect for a quality king size latex bed…ballpark it if you need to as I know there will be differences based on what we want.
Thanks again,
Peanut (Jeff)

Hi Jeff,

The range of a quality all latex mattress will be fairly wide depending on the amount of latex, the type of latex, the quilting and ticking, and the method of construction. In general though to give a rough estimate the “good value” range would normally be in the area of about $1500 to under $3000 for a king size with the upper range being for thicker or more “customized” mattresses, ticking/quilting options etc… This would be from about 8" to 12". Beyond this you could still have more intricate or labor intensive construction methods, more highly customized or personalized designs, or other more costly choices for those that wanted them and put greater value on these more expensive options, materials, or construction methods.

I sleep on a 2 sided all latex mattress that was built to my own design by one of our members. It has a 4" 28 ILD core, 3" of 22 ILD on each side, and then a ticking/quilting that includes quiltable latex and a down alternative fiber. You can see a picture of it here.

Phoenix

Phoenix,
Well, we met with a local manufacturer, www.mattresses.net, and was very pleased with what is available and the comfort, but may still be above our price range. The mattress itself would be $1395 + tax, then we’d need a foundation…anyway, just a little more money we don’t really have. Latex may not be economical right now…So, we then went to look at the Simmons Beautyrest Classic line and found a comfortable bed, but the reviews are not good based on what seems to be a common sagging issue after a couple years, if not sooner, or a warrantee that is apparently impossible to utilize. Is there a decent bed set/ out there for about $1000?
Thanks,
Jeff
PS I would suggest anyone in Phoenix, AZ to visit these guys for a latex bed…Extremely nice, informative and helpful.

Hi Peanut,

What I normally suggest for people looking for a “budget” version of a latex mattress is to use a latex comfort layer over a good quality polyfoam support core. Because polyfoam is much less expensive than latex, this will often bring the cost down to under $1000 for the mattress and sometimes for the set depending on the mattress. It would certainly be worth calling some of the Phoenix manufacturers I listed earlier as I believe that several of them manufacture or carry a model like this. While its nice to have an all latex mattress at half the price of an equivalent mattress in a chain store … sometimes its just not possible. A latex comfort layer over polyfoam has many of the benefits of an all latex mattress and it doesn’t have the “weak link” of having polyfoam in the comfort layers like most of the major manufacturers (like the Simmons you mentioned).

I know that Walmart also carries a 3" talalay latex over polyfoam mattress in King size here. While this doesn’t give you a chance to try it out first to make sure that the specific ILD and layer thickness is suitable for you and there have been some reports of it not decompressing … at least Walmart has a great return policy if you don’t like it or if anything goes wrong.

We are actually in the middle of putting together a new line of latex mattresses that will have your choice of either a 3" 7 zoned dunlop topper or a 3" talalay latex topper over a 6" soy foam base. Both these models will be priced under $1000 to fit today’s economic crunch. We are ready to roll with these but I have not had a chance to put them up on the site yet. Call me for more info. You will also have your choice of ILD’s for the Talalay topper, the Dunlop is zoned between 21-25 ILD making it a “medium” feel overall. Ken 623-580-0288 https://www.mattresses.net
