Factory Direct Mattresses in the Toronto, ON and GTA area.

Thanks for the list, Phoenix!

I’m reading through the tutorial which brought me here. Just wondering if there are any places you would add (or remove) from this list since this post is over a year old.

Thank you,

Dean

Hi Dean18.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum! … You are very welcome.

With the ever-changing landscape of the mattress industry, it would be quite difficult to maintain and keep up to date records of showroom listings or potential retailers/manufacturers in various geographical areas across the US and Canada. This would require periodical reviewing of each retailer/manufacturer already listed and researching for any new entries which would be a full job in itself and is not the focus of our site. As we come across new information we revisit and edit the old listings to add/remove any relevant information. This is a more organic process in which we also encourage consumer feedback to point out new additions, changes, and useful findings. If in your research, you come across something that is missing or has changed please feel free to share it with us and make TMU Forum a more useful resource.

Phoenix

I am a 220 pound male senior with lower back problem looking for a firm twin bed mattress in the Toronto area. I have done a fair amount of research on this site and I think I have a general idea of what I need: something like a natural or blended latex foam mattress with a medium ILD in the comfort layer and a firmer ILD in a Dunlop support layer or layers. I have also come across bio-foam at Foamite and other locations. What they offer at Foamite, for example, is Dunlop comfort layer with a “Koosh” support layer that they say is 60% soy oil. One or two sided in the $1600-1800 range. One question I have is whether the soy oil “green” foam compares in the important areas of quality as Dunlop latex foam. I also would appreciate hearing what other have found in the Toronto area for high quality latex foam mattresses, particularly ones that will provide the maximum support for my lower back. Much appreciated.

Hey rogerholla,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum! :).

Sorry about the bad back, it’s also tough to talk about back issues with general salespeople as "back/neck/shoulder issues can be a complicated issue that is specific to an individual.

Foamite is a fabricator, not a foam producer. They distribute many grades of high-quality poly foam materials. There is more about foams containing polyols derived from soy in post #2 here (polyfoam or memory foam wouldn’t be considered a “natural” material). Foamite’s Koosh natural soy-based foam is simply categorized as a polyfoam or a memory foam. This article about soy-based poly is also well worth reading.

The 60% number is misleading, of course, but a salesperson would use the marketing that Koosh uses:

This is easy to say as no baseline data is given? 60% less than what? 100% more natural could be increased from 5% to 10%?

If you would like to compare a Koosh topper to a latex topper it would be all the different articles regarding the comparisons between Latex and memory foam. Or the pro’s and con’s articles about memory foam and latex.. And you can also check out the durability guidelines to compare the different technologies and how they work with your BMI.

You can search other threads for retailers in Toronto, I also highly recommend you contact one of our trusted members. You can see contact info for two Canadian members, Memory Foam Comfort or Dormio Organic Beds, both of which have deep experience and understanding of any type of foam mattress.

Thanks again, and please let us know if you have other questions.

Hi rogerhola
take a look at our profile here on TMU as well as our website www.swissdreambeds.com It seems to me that our beds may be matching your description of:
medium comfort layer / firm support layer / high quality latex foam / designed for lower back pain cases. And we have a showroom in South Etobicoke that you can visit by appointment.

HI Rogerholla, It sounds like you are on the right track with your idea of ILD and layering. Remember to keep the type of cover in mind as well. An Organic Cotton with 4 way stretch will cause you body to interact with the latex differently in comparison to an Organic Canvas with no stretch. One or the other might be better for you depending on body layout.

Hello @phoenix & TMU community,

I’ve gone down the rabbit hole with mattress research… so thankful I found this place as a resource!
I’m in the Greater Vancouver, BC area (Langley) and my husband and I need to update our mattress. Because he has chronic acid reflux and needs to sleep with bed risers tilting the head of the bed up all night (and because I find it uncomfortable to sleep on an incline), we are looking for 2 Twin XLs side-by-side. The benefit of this set up is that we can pass them on to kiddos in 10 years… and then upgrade! Our goal is latex+wool, no coils.

I’m hoping some of you can pipe in here with our findings and help us narrow down a decision.

Balancer - Das Original
We tried this out at InBed Organics. Jem was very helpful. The bed was a little firmer than we are used to, but the longer we stayed in the store, lying on all the different latex mattresses… it really started to grow on me. I’m leaning towards this system because my German half has a weakness for clever design, and I don’t have to think about buying a bedframe. “One purchase and done.”
My only hesitation is that, transitioning from a lifetime of coil and memory foam plushness, this is too firm a jump.
~$3,500 total, tax & shipping included!

8" Eco-Deluxe by InBed Organics
InBed Organics’ home line, the Eco Deluxe 6" med core + 2" soft topper felt quite nice. Though Jem warned us that the 2" topper had just arrived today, all high and plush with fresh wool and that it would feel different in a matter of weeks… having that thick wedge of latex almost felt more supportive than the Das Original. In other words, the 6+2 felt like Grandma, and the Das Original’s 4+slats+4 system felt like your strict English prof that you revere. But maybe after a while, the strict prof might feel like a surrogate Grandma…?
Jem offered us $3,500 for 2 Twin XL 8" Eco Deluxe mattresses, not incl. tax & shipping. We would also have to buy bed frames, so this is the more expensive option.

Memory Foam Comfort
Chatting with Mario on the phone, he explained that their mattresses are actually manufactured by Nature’s Embrace, but in order to not enter into competition, MFC sells exclusively online and has no showroom. He told me he could make me any mattress I wanted, so encouraged me to go try out some beds and just let him know whatever I wanted. Makes sense, I guess. I liked that his website had the ILDs listed.
From their website, the Maoli 8" matches the Eco Deluxe in specs.
$2,318 for 2 Twin XL 8" Maoli with TMU discount, + tax & shipping… and bedframes.

North Shore Linens
Among many other amazingly priced items on their website (I really want to visit their store), they’ve got the Arpico Supreme, 6" medium with 3" soft topper encased in organic cotton.
$2,260 for 2 Twin XL 9" Arpico Supreme, + tax & shipping… and bedframes.
Cheaper than MFC AND 1" squishier!

I’ve become paralyzed with too many options.
I’m sure there are other local companies who could match this 6"+2" option, some with wool or without. Maybe the reason I’m posting here, is I’m hoping other fans of the Das Original will sing its praises loud enough to make up my mind. Or, chime in with thoughts of these retailers above. Or, recommend yet another?

Thanks in advance!

HI youngladylove,

It was good talking with you over the phone.

It’s important to note that our prices include taxes and shipping, so the price you see on our website, is the final price you’ll pay. Plus, we give you 2 FREE shredded latex pillows.

Good luck in your search

Hi there,

Thought I would respond to this as I believe this is a similar topic. I am 5’10 170 lbs mainly stomach but also side sleeper. I have had the same spring mattress for a number of years that is beginning to sag and have been using this site to look at my options. I am from Canada and looking for more of a budget mattress. After contact Douglas mattresses, they recommended since I am a stomach sleeper and most likely used to a firmer mattress, that the Brunswick mattress would most likely be a better fit as it is a combo spring/foam mattress and the douglas mattress would be too soft.

Here is the link: https://www.brunswickbed.ca/shop/brunswick-spring-mattress/

they look to be affiliated with Novosbed as well which I know used to be a trusted member here. The density specs on this bed are as follows:

The first layer of foam is 3/4" of a cooling gel foam that has a density of 1.8 lbs. Followed by a 1" layer of cooling gel foam with a density of 2.5". Then by a Memory foam that is 1.5lbs.

I was just wondering if you might be able to provide some thoughts on this mattress as well as any other budget mattresses that could be good to look into.

I have also been looking at the MFC HD and HR foam mattresses as well.

Thanks

Well, 3 years later I have finally finished this project. We "lived " (more like suffered) with the Memory foam Zedbed for 3 more years. My wife does not care. I weigh over 200lbs, have a marginally crappy lower back and finally gave in as I sat on the the 11 inch Zedbed and sank 4-5 inches into it. I am a side sleeper.

Cost was the only reason to delay. I did end up using the zipper encasement from the Zedbed. I began the search again from scratch. I hoped to find something in Canada as $1USD is presently $1.36 Cdn…ouch…so I considered the 85% blended Mausand mattress from Ikea. My son actually ended up buying a Queen for his newly purchased townhouse. The King size was on sale for 1199 Cdn in early Sept. It is rated as medium firm and I wanted something with support but a bit softer. Also, it is only 7 inches thick so I was concerned about support with my weight.

I looked at 2 mattress stores that sold all natural 10inch latex mattress for no less than 3k Cdn.
I decided upon using my existing encasement/cover and 9 inches of mattress to be comprised of 3 x3 inch layers.

I looked very closely at “Naturelle” aka Latex Green aka whatever located only 1.5 hrs from me as they sell the layers individually or an 9-10 inch complete mattress for $2500-3000 Cdn.
The reviews on here were vague as were any details about the company. The layers could only be purchased online . I was close to getting a 6 inch core and a 3 inch comfort layer but I was hesitant due to the lack of very meaningful info or reviews. Finally, when I was about to check out my order I got a message that I would have to call in to do a credit card order!! what? no way! That ended that sketchiness.

During my research I discovered SleeponLatex. It was USD princing and shipping was a cost of course but the online reviews and reputation on this site were consistently good.

In addition I received the 5% code from this site.

I settled upon 2 x3 inch medium ILD layers and one 3 inch soft layer for comfort, knowing that even 1 firm support layer would likely be a waste of $$.

My total cost including shipping to Canada for these 3x3 inch King layers was under $1000USD or about $1300 Cdn (plus Cdn taxes)

After 3 weeks I can attest that this was a great choice. The mattress is softer than the IKEA and the 2 mattresses I tested in other stores . Both my wife and I liked it instantly. The support below it is perfect. No pressure points on my hips or shoulders and no sore back in the morning.

Thanks to this site !

Hi johnsazzr,

Thanks for sharing your experience, I’m happy to see that customers are taking the time to research and put together some quality mattresses without breaking the bank!

Just to let you and potential customers know, we also started selling components for the do it yourself mattress customers. We could have offered you a similar 9" stack made of organic dunlop latex for about $200 more than what you got for the natural dunlop of Sleep on latex.

Congratulation on your DIY mattress

Best,

Hi Everyone,

Im currently in the same boat as you guys and looking for a mattress around Toronto. It will be from my parents (58 and 51 years old). They are 160-200 lbs and are back sleepers. They prefer medium firm to firm (I know this is subjective).

They prefer to try something in person so that limits my options to in-store stuff. They tried a Sealy posturepedic signature plus at hudson bay and really liked it. However, I know people here say Sealy dont use durable foam etc so Ive been trying to find an equivalent to this mattress in the same price range (900-1200 CAD$). Ive been looking at the hybrid hamuq but cant find alot of information online.

Are there any brands (hybrids) that are in this price range and with a similar firmness to the sealy I mentioned?

Also one thing that is bothering me in addition to sealy not being the best quality is that specific line (signature plus) seems to be discontinued since 2011. Can it be that hudson bay is getting specific models made for them?

Thank you
Moustafa

I have the exact same situation!!
(except that InBed Organics is waaaay out of my price range - if you’re looking at that kind of thing Dormio’s an option too)

For what it’s worth (and you may have already bought a mattress) I emailed North Shore Linens to ask about their ILDs for their softness ratings and Matt sent me this:

The ILD’s are as follows:
Super Soft 14-18
Soft 25-30
Medium 35-40
Firm 44-50

which are different from MFC’s soft/medium/firm 20/30/40 ILDs.

Did buy a bed and if so how is it?

I’ve been haunting Memory Foam Comfort’s website for a while and love their clear ILD, layer, and price specs! It makes me want to DIY but I suspect I’d end up getting it wrong a lot and replacing layers and the costs would add up

Hey Moustafa,

I see you are doing your research, good job  . Just curious, are your parents looking for a queen or king size bed?

It would be hard for anyone to tell if two very distinct mattresses that are not “side-by-side” have similar firmness and feel as this would depend on the perception and preferences of each individual sleeper (no two people have similar experiences) Have you considered testing a CBH Wood Balancer Mattress? They have a showroom in Toronto and from what you describe this would match most of your criteria. You can call them directly at this number b 390-8169[/b].

Dormio also has a Toronto Showroom and may have something of interest. Their Legacy 8 line features 8" of Natural Dunlop Latex, Organic Wool and “My side/Your side” technology, offering each sleeper firm or softer support, also with two different firmness levels on top. The Legacy 8 line’s pricing begins at $1498 CAD$, a little higher than the 900-1200 CAD$ range you mentioned, but TMU’s Trusted Members offer a bit of a discount to consumer members of this site so they are worth checking into. Both CBH Wood Furniture and Dormio Organic Beds are Trusted Members of The Mattress Underground which means that you can take advantage of the discounts they are giving to TMU consumer-members for doing their research ;).

I’m not finding specs on the hybrid hamuq but if you do, please share that on the Mattress Underground Forum and I’ll comment about those later?.

Mattresses are rarely produced in exact matches when models are changed within a lineup, and attempting to find something that is exactly the same is often a frustrating and futile exercise especially if you are trying to do that on your own. There is more information about the different ways that one mattress can “match” or “approximate” another one in post #9. Phoenix would tell you that every layer and component in a mattress (including the cover and any quilting materials) will affect the feel and performance of every other layer and component and the mattress “as a whole” so unless you are able to find another mattress that uses exactly the same type of materials, components, cover and quilting, layer thicknesses, layer firmnesses, and overall design (which would be fairly unlikely) then there really isn’t a reliable way to match one mattress to another one in terms of “comfort”, firmness, and PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and your Personal preferences) based on the specifications of the mattresses (even assuming that you can find out all the specifications you would need for both mattresses you are comparing in the first place). This being said you’d be on the right track by seeking guidance from an experienced manufacturer or retailer, who would be the ones to best approximate a mattress feel based on all the specs and your parents’ personal needs and preferences you may provide.

Hudson Bay carries at least 9 brands including Sealy. Even though they are a major mattress retailer in the area, it’s highly unlikely that Sealy would have a special program exclusive to HB. Generally, the mattresses are the same except for different labels/ names and different covers, giving the illusion of their own program.

Thanks,
Sensei

Hey insomniacsrus,

Welcome to our Mattress Forum!

Thanks for the kind words about trusted member Memory Foam Comfort’s website; as Phoenix mentioned earlier, they have a very good selection of latex mattresses and hybrids in this topic’s general price range. Did you purchase a mattress from MFC or are you still researching?

Thanks,
Sensei

We couldn’t find a king all-latex bed which has enough layers to be comfy AND <2000. But looks like we’re staying under $3000 for frame + mattress.

Think it’ll be (from north shore linens) :

6" 35-40 ILD - 2 individually covered twin XL’s
2" 25-30 ILD - king
2" 14-18 ILD - king

We’re thinking north shore linens mainly because it worked out cheaper, but also if anything does go wrong and we need to use the warranty a local place seems easier.

I do have a question about layers and cases though sensei, if you wouldn’t mind!
So at the moment we’re thinking a separate layer system: each of the 6" twin XL’s in their own cover, then either each of the king 2" layers in their own covers or both in one cover.
The reasoning behind that was so it’s be easier to rotate and flip each component - if they’re all in one case it’ll be a pain and therefore less likely to actually happen!
But I don’t know if that’s better or worse for heat dissipation? My partner is an absolute furnace so we’re trying to get a setup with that in mind (breathable covers, wool topper, linen sheets, well ventilated slat base)

Btw for anyone looking for latex in the Vancouver area I do thoroughly recommend checking out mattresses there - owners are lovely, can talk you through options and help you try out different layers (and also leave you alone to try it out for ages). They don’t have all possible layers in all possible thicknesses on hand but they have enough for you to experiment (and I expect would be willing to work with you to try out a specific combo on a later date).

Trying them out was super useful in figuring out what layers we actually wanted and this was the only place in Vancouver we found which had separate layers we could mess around with.

Since it has not been mentioned in this thread, there is also Cloud Nine Furniture (https://cloudninefurniture.ca/) that offer latex beds in the Vancouver area. They have a mobile showroom.

Hi insomniacsrus,

Another store in Vancouver where you can go and try different layers of organic dunlop latex (in all thicknesses and ILD’s), as well as complete latex mattresses is Majestic Sit and Sleep They are owned by Nature’s Embrace Organic Latex Mattresses and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They also sell individual covers for the latex layers as well as mattress covers if you want to do it yourself (DIY).

Hope this gives you more options in the Vancouver area.

all the best

Thanks CBHWoodFurniture for mentioning Cloud Nine to Forum members:) . They are on track of becoming a trusted member of TMU once all criteria is met. Recently, Phoenix visited their mobile showroom at Ambleside market I North Vancouver and saw great potential in this form of mobile display, they are servicing consumers with only top quality products.

Cheers,
Sensei

Thanks for your question, insomniacsrus!

Yes, it is correct to think of a modular system like this when it comes to rotating … just a few things to keep in mind:
• Usually latex does not need much rotation if at all. Rotating a system would not have an impact on the temperature
• All the covers and enclosures will alter the feel and comfort/support balance of the system depending on how tight/lose they are
• sleeping temperature, the materials, layers, and components of a sleeping system that are closer to your skin will have a bigger effect on airflow, moisture transport, and temperature regulation than materials, layers, and components that are further away from your skin
• There is more about the many variables that can affect the sleeping temperature of a mattress or sleeping system in post #2 here that can help you choose the types of materials and components that are most likely to keep you in a comfortable temperature range. Latex itself is a quite breathable material.
• Latex in general is also the most breathable and “temperature neutral” of all the different types of foam materials but the firmness of a mattress and how much you sink into it can also affect sleeping temperature as well. While it’s also not always possible to track down temperature regulation issues for any particular person on a specific mattress because there are so many variables involved (including your room temperature and humidity, your sheets and bedding and bedclothes, your mattress protector or any mattress pads you are using, and where you are in the “oven to iceberg” range) and some people can sleep warmer on mattresses that most people are generally fine with … there is more about tracking mattress temperature regulation issues potential causes ~ Post #2 here (at least to the degree possible for a specific mattress) and the posts it links to that may be helpful.

@CBHWoodFurniture, thanks for mentioning Cloud Nine Furniture to our Vancouver shoppers!

@MFC, thanks too for the Majestic Sit and Sleep mention for Vancouver shoppers. Always appreciate when TMU Trusted Members help out the consumer  .
