Family Bed Mattress Help

I have done hours of reading on here and elsewhere. I am truly struggling right now and need advice and input.

I desperately need input from others. This is such a big decision to make alone.

My budget is about $600 for a king size mattress (or so, if made in Japan) for a floor bed to share with our 9 month old baby. We weigh 120 and 140 lbs and are both 5’ tall with a BIG baby who is already over 20 lbs. Our personal comfort isn’t really the priority and it’s easier to make a bed softer as our daughter gets older than it is to firm something up. However, my wife will not be happy if I keep buying mattresses!

Priorities:

  • Not tufted

  • No more than 8 inches high, but prefer lower

  • Safe materials and no flame retardants

  • Doesnt hold heat or mould to the body

  • Can receive it in the next month or so

I’m between a few ideas:

  • Cotton and Wool Shiki futon from The Futon Shop

  • Cotton and Wool Futon from [Matsu Store]

  • Creating my own mattress through Foam Factory / Foam by Mail

If I make my own, I’m thinking 3 inches of HQ Lux foam, 2 inch Dunlop Latex Topper, and a wool pad protector from somewhere else.

If anyone has recommendations for another f shop that I could find something big (around king size, doesn’t need to be exact) for less than $600, please share! My DMs are open.

Would love any input… please help me think this through.

I think I saw this question on another forum, but the answer is going to be a bit similar.

There are not too many quality USA made mattress in this category, but the flexispot king u3 is made with certipur-us foam and is about 500 in a king. The Brooklyn Bedding DreamFoam Hybrid in a king is just over $600 with discounts available from @yawnder . The @BeloitMattress Foam Majestic is close to your budget and firmness needs. The @MattressFactory in texas offers a Orthopedic Accord mattress in a king for under 600. And Texas Mattress Makers come in under $700 for a king TMM value plus. All of these mattress are good quality mattresses made in the USA. Will land on the firmer side which is good for the baby. If you have any questions, happy to help. Just stay away from the “amazon” specials. Here is something from a former TM of the Mattress Underground

All the best,
