Feedback on my Flexus build

Rate my build!

I just pulled the trigger on a Flexus Comfort all-latex natural mattress.

I really like that they offer 100% natural (not blended) Dunlop of Talalay for the same price.

Here is the build: Queen 13":

Soft Talalay (one sheet, to avoid split in middle)
Medium Dunlop (split layer)
Firm Talalay (split layer)
Firm Dunlop (split layer)

Base: Sam’s Club Member’s Mark Premium adjustable

After discounts the total was ~$1550.

I’m 5’7" and 165lbs, athletic build and my wife is 5’7" and 120lbs. My wife is almost exclusively a side sleeper and I Prefer to sleep on my back but have been sleeping on my side more since I have very mild sleep apnea (doesn’t require treatment).

Is what we ordered a good match for our sleeping styles? We tried the avocado and found it to be too firm. We tried my nephew’s My Green Mattress Kiwi and liked it and also liked my parent’s Pranasleep Vinyasa (which I believe is all Talalay). Should we have ordered all Talalay? Different layer firmness? I know 100% can be more inconsistent but we’re willing to live with a trade-off to avoid petroleum products in the mattress.

Hi SudOvest.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Apologies for the delay in a reply.

At first glance, your build looks very reasonable. What are the layer thicknesses of each layer?

The split layers in the support/base layers is always a good idea as it can allow for layer swapping and tweaking to get the configuration just right on either side. I’m also interested to know how you came to this exact configuration. Was is based on forum research, the guidance of Henry at Flexus, something else?

As for whether you should have ordered all Dunlop or all Talalay, I personally believe both have a place in an all-latex mattress. Dunlop is frequently compared to pound cake where Talalay is compared to angel food cake. Ultimately, it will really come down to what you like best, but Dunlop is very popular for base layers (and even in comfort layers, if you prefer Dunlop to Talalay).

Thank you!

It was only $100 to upgrade from 10" to 13", so we opted to do it since Henry mentioned it would provide more opportunities to fine-tune adjustments in the layers.

Originally, Ken at APM recommended 11" with 3" talalay soft comfort layer then a 2" talalay medium then 6" dunlop firm. Henry thought it would be too soft and recommended the typical extra firm dunlop, firm dunlop, medium dunlop and then soft talalay, all 3". I went with a hybrid of both. There is a shipping delay so I’m sure I can make some changes. I ultimately went with Flexus because I wanted to be able to return it if we didn’t like it.

Regarding Talalay vs Dunlop, would you make any changes, or changes in the ILD of the layers? And did we need 13"?

Hi Sud0vest.

If Henry and Ken both made similar recommendations, I’d trust that advice! They are experts in their field and wouldn’t make a suggestion that doesn’t make sense for your “somnum”-type. I agree with Henry that more layers = better capabilities for fine tuning. It’s easy to take away a layer and put it back, swap places, etc. But Ken’s recommendation for a 6" base foam is also excellent, especially since it’s unlikely you’d be making major adjustments to that layer to begin with.

It really comes down to your own preference. (Like so many things mattress related, haha).

No, there’s nothing I see here that I would recommend you change; a lot of it will come down to your own testing and how things feel on a mattress. If things are feeling wonky, we can troubleshoot and see where the problem is coming from.
