Feeling overwhelmed—side-sleeping and cosleeping

Our current mattress isn’t even two years old, but it isn’t working for us. Current mattress is a queen size Stumptown original, which felt great for the first few months, but now lacks support, especially under my hips (except in the exact middle). Yes, we are rotating it. My husband still likes it fine, but doesn’t like all my tossing and turning. More importantly, it’s definitely too soft for my toddler, who comes in with us partway through the night. It’s all memory foam, which I know isn’t recommended for babies and kids. His poor little head gets so sweaty after even an hour!

My husband is 145lbs, 5’11", I am 180lbs 5’6". I am a side-sleeper, usually with one leg extended if that matters. My husband is pretty evenly combination. Our budget is about $2000. We are in the Seattle area.

We can’t put an additional mattress exclusive to cosleeping in some guest room, since there is no guest room. So any mattress needs to work for our toddler and any future babies, where firmness is even more important—AND for me and my husband to use long term. Since we intend to share with baby, material safety is important to me also. I’ve been considering using a mattress topper on a new firm mattress, and removing it for cosleeping. Though that’s a lot of effort for a frequently spontaneous decision.

Right now, I like the lack of movement transfer in the Stumptown mattress (but I could live with less), and the edge support. (Sitting on the edge collapses it right down, but when baby is asleep and I’m stuck sleeping almost on the edge, it does fine.)

I also like how comfortable my shoulders are side sleeping on this mattress. I only use one pillow, when for most of my life on traditional spring mattresses I’ve used three. The discomfort is primarily in my hips, and it’s gotten less disruptive to my sleep, possibly as I’ve lost weight. (Down to ~180 from 200lbs.)

I’d almost decided to purchase an Avocado mattress (the Green model, with a latex topper to give the sidesleeping comfort of their next most comfortable model, but with the option to firm things up for the little one). But then I read some bad reviews about body impressions, the problem I seem to be having with my own mattress.

Then I felt almost ready to get a My Green Mattress, Natural Escape, but got lost in the rabbit hole of mattress shopping and felt greatly overwhelmed. Would really appreciate some guidance!

Hi @evrobe

We understand the heat transfer that a toddler can have in your bed! Our line of shippable mattresses has scientifically crafted foam that will not retain body heat and allows for cool air flow.

They are also constructed with pocketed coil units to minimize motion transfer. I don’t know about your toddler, but our toddlers always liked to make a grand entrance with big bounce on the bed in the middle of the night! These pocketed coil units provide support but prevent motion transfer.

For your price range I recommend our Magnolia model, which with our TMU discount will be well within your price point.

Happy shopping and please let us know if you have any questions!
