fell IN LOVE with mattress at store, what was delivered does not feel at all the same. Very Worried

Hi jujub1,

You really have two key questions here … one of which I’ve answered and one which I haven’t. I’ll reply to them one at a time to make my thoughts a little clearer.

Question #1

Any mattress (including the PLB) can be made to be as soft as you wish by adding more and more soft layers on top of the mattress using various different foams and other materials. The challenge with this is that the thicker and softer the upper layers are … the more you risk affecting your spinal alignment (which can cause back issues). In your case however it seems that pressure relief is a bigger priority than alignment however I would still make sure that your alignment was as good as possible which means using the minimum amount of softer materials on top of the mattress that provide the pressure relief you need. “Just enough” is the key here.

The key with this is to add a layer and use it for a while (an adjustment and evaluation period) then decide if this is “just enough” or whether you need an additional layer of something even softer. the choice of additional layers will depend on how much more “softness” and pressure relief you believe you need after each evaluation and adjustment period.

Question #2

This is the one I tried to answer previously. I’ll try to be a little more clear this time

Because you have nothing to base the comparison on … this is really not possible to answer this until you re-create your experience in the store. This means finding the original combination that you liked so much. It would be some combination of foundation, mattress, and topper.

If you cannot re-create the combination that felt the way you remember … the most probable reason is that what you felt was more of a subjective perception which can change from day to day, week to week, or time frame to time frame and will be affected by many other factors that have more to do with how you are feeling at a particular time than they do with the mattress itself.

If you can re-create the combination … then this leads to the probability that the combination itself is the main reason behind what you felt and that this feeling can be somewhat duplicated regardless of how your perceptions and circumstances may change over time.

So the first step is to see if you can re-create the baseline combination which felt the way you remember. My guess is the most likely combination would be the PLB latex foundation with the Beautiful over that and the topper over that so this is the place I would begin. Ask the store to set this up for you. If this feels the way you remember, then you have the baseline as a point of reference and you would then know what changes to make to make your combination at home feel the same as in the store.

This combination (whether in the store or its “duplicate” at home) may still not be “just right” once you have slept on it for a while (the adjustment period) but at least you would have a baseline that was the same as your store experience and you could add other layers to it to make it softer yet if that became necessary.

If it does turn out that the “perfect” combination was the mattress and topper on the latex foundation … then you would also have a rather difficult choice to make about whether duplicating this feeling was more important or whether having an adjustable base was more important.

If you decided on the adjustable base even though it wasn’t as soft as the combination you loved in the store … then you could start the process of adding toppers to what you have to make it softer (bearing in mind the risk to your alignment). A possible alternative to this would be to use a softer topper instead of the one that you tested in the store to see if that came closer to what you want when the mattress is on an adjustable base.

So this is the question that you will need to answer for yourself by finding out whether you can re-create your experience in the store and find a reference point from which to make some difficult choices and to adjust the combination you are using at home. This will tell you whether what you felt was more connected to how you were feeling that day or whether it was the combination in the store that you tested. Either way … the answer to this “mystery” (was what you felt more about you or the mattress) is the first step to knowing what the next step after this may be. Making adjustments to what you have now without having a reference point for what you originally felt in the store would be like rolling the dice and “hoping” that any changes would work. The odds of “getting it right” would be against you.

Either way there are always “better” solutions (although none may be perfect) … but it’s important to know first which “problem” you are trying to “fix”.

In terms of your husband sweating on the bed … there are many possible reasons for this and a more temperature regulating mattress protector may help a lot. While latex is more breathable than other foams … the softer a mattress is and the deeper you sink in … the more likely the odds that you will sleep hotter (there is more “insulation” around you when you sink in deeper). Outside of controlling external temperature with an air conditioner (which may cause issues for you) usually a combination of mattress protector, more breathable and natural sheets, less bedding, or temperature regulating materials or fabrics can solve the problem. Synthetics in any of these tend to sleep hotter than natural fibers.

Hope this helps.

Phoenix

Phoenix,

So sorry for all frustration I have caused you - and thanks for staying patient even though I wasn’t “getting it”. I guess I was not looking at that the same way you were on that question – SO SORRY!!

Alignment is very important of course – until recently, I had been seeing chiropractor also every single week for over 18 years (just stopped recently due to insurance change not covering it like it used to). It is a major issue actually with my medical conditions and with the scoliosis, but bottom line is if it is not soft enough for me to stand, then it is not going to work regardless-- so I have to say softer/pressure relief trumps alignment for me even though I am out of alignment more often than not.

If the wool proctector will also change the feel of the bed alot, then I am not sure which one of those to go for either – too many places do not allow exchanges of bedding and without actually putting it on the bed and feeling it, I won’t know if it will work. I sure wish I had lots of money to burn on trial and error!!

I feel like giving up completely right now as I will never be absolutely sure what is the best solution to even ask for and not wanting to put them out if it was me (although, with my pain levels so high all the time, it is hard to believe it wasn’t something about the setup, but who knows!! I think I will pray on it and hope some answer comes to me as a starting point at least. I have a huge fear that I will not be able to re-create that initial feeling I had that day as they just don’t seem even remotely willing to be open to working with us much at the store. Maybe I am wrong though. My husband has already given up and just keeps telling me the money is gone and there is nothing we can do about it. (We really have had some bad experiences in the past also that doesn’t help this.) I will never forgive myself for this impulse buy – God I wish I could go back in time!!

You are much appreciated and again am so sorry for my ignorance in not catching what you trying to tell me!! I feel so bad for making you revisit it with me when you obviously are so busy helping so many on this site alone!!

Take Care!

Hi Judi,

You have enough to worry about as it is and I certainly wouldn’t worry about “getting it” the first time with anything. Everything is more difficult when you are in pain or emotionally affected. Just between you and me … I sometimes don’t “get it” with lots of stuff the second, third or 4th time but I just keep on going until I do, no matter how foolish I may feel

Based on what you have said in this thread … I would also make pressure relief a priority … not to the exclusion of alignment but as a more important priority.

There may be a few places that allow for exchanges with bedding and protectors even though most normally don’t. It may take a bit of research and a few phone calls to ask (even if it would be an exception) but at least you can do that from home.

You’ve already come this far and you have a great “baseline” and a Beautiful (literally) mattress which is a high quality product even though it may still need some tweaking because of your circumstances. I really would call the store though and make an appointment with your original salesperson to have them set up the mattress on the latex foundation to see what that feels like and then go in and try it out. Keep to one thing only (trying out this combination). It shouldn’t be too difficult for them and it would just be a matter then of going into the store and trying it. As long as they get the sense that you are looking for solutions rather than “blame” they would likely be more helpful. I would make this your starting point.

Once this is done … then the next step will likely be clearer and I would take things one small step at a time rather than trying to figure everything out all at once. Each step will give you a little more information that will make the next one more manageable. It’s called “small chunking”

So I would do this step and only this step and then you will be in a better position to know what “small step” or decision is next. I wouldn’t walk away when you are already well along the path. While everything may be more difficult … if you take small steps you will eventually get to your best possible solution.

Phoenix

Phoenix,

You are absolutley awesome – you really said some things that helped calm me and that I really needed to hear. I will get my guts up and deal with the store again to work on finding the original set up to go from there. Thank you so much for your encouragement (and patience). I thought I was careful before about not pushing blame, but will try to be extra vigilant again to be sure nothing can be construed as such. You are such a Godsend. I don’t know how you do all you do.

Remembering that it is a high quality bed really helps and trying to have faith now that one way or another we will get it work out eventually. I will be in touch once I have done this and if needs be I will call the Director at Latex Bliss again too since he has really always been great and seemed very willing to try to figure something out.

I will also call around to places about the protector – but one step at a time. Liked your analogy very much - small chunking.

At least we didn’t buy a really bad quality mattress - thanks for that reminder also!

Have a wonderful day!
