First Mattress Purchase and lack the knowledge to find what suits my needs

Hello all! I need some help figuring out what mattress type will best suit my needs.
I’m 5’1, 25yo, 135lbs. I sleep primarily on my side, occasionally on my back and I sleep very hot. I suffer from chronic neck and back pain(both upper and lower back) and really need a mattress that doesn’t exacerbate these issues. I’m looking for something in the ballpark of $1200-$1800 but I’m willing to spend more for something that is a good fit and will last a long time.

I used to be a stomach sleeper but I had surgery to fix my airway and ever since I’ve slept primarily on my side. I was happy with the firm mattress I was on but ever since switching sleeping positions I find that my neck and back pain have gotten much worse.

I have tried to do my own research but the more I learn the more overwhelmed I feel and would appreciate any guidance the folks here can offer me.

I’m in the Boston area so I was looking at checking out Gardner, Sigma and The Clean Bedroom but other having locations I don’t really know what I should be looking for and what possible traps I should avoid falling into.

Thank you for reading and for any guidance you can offer, it is greatly appreciated.

Take the TMU tutorial for sure.

Have the discipline to stay in your preferred position for 15 minutes.

Hey MADermard.

Welcome to our mattress forum

The good news is you have a solid list of showrooms to visit. All three are Trusted Members of our site, and are extremely knowledgable. They’ll be able to address your concerns and answer your questions with expertise!

The good news there is there will be no traps, especially if you mention that you discovered them here on The Mattress Underground.

As a rule, lighter weights will need softer and thinner comfort layers. In general a good starting point for a good comfort layer for a side sleeper is 3" and then depending on weight, body shape, preferences, and the firmness of the support layers, to go up or down from there. Most side sleepers will fall in the range of from 2" -4".

Please do keep us posted on how things go!
