First time doing a DIY-too much foam?

Hello,

I’m primarily a side sleeper (6’ 190 pounds but on weight loss journey down to 175-180) and my wife is also mostly a side sleeper (5’8” around 130 pounds). We have a 15.5 gauge TPS coils with 1 inch of foam underneath them and 2” of medium Dunlop and 2” of soft talalay over the coils. We’re still in the process of nailing down the build but I’m wondering if in general this amount of latex is normal or if it’s too much? Main aim of the build is pressure relief for hips and shoulders but don’t want to have too much foam that the support layer of coils is useless.

That’s the average amount of foam. Look at the nova form platinum luxury mattress. It’s got 6" springs with 1.5" of foam on the bottom and is 16.5" tall. 9 inches of foam on top of the springs :joy:

Your build looks great.

Awesome, good to know thanks! Dang that a whole lotta foam in that mattress haha.

Hey vandyman.

I agree, the build looks pretty solid.

How is it feeling? Have you had a chance to test it?

First test run last night with the 2” of Dunlop under the talalay and it was overall pretty good! Can’t tell if I’m still getting any pain in my shoulder and hip area but it is seemingly much less than our old mattress. Also, can’t tell if it somehow makes my leg fall asleep or not haha.

Luxury mattress makers such as WilliamsCo and Naturepedic have begun using two layers of coils (not microcoils, but either two 6” coils or an 8” coil paired with a 5” coil) in their most expensive mattresses. They then add about 3” of latex, and the top panel typically contains 1.5” to 2.5” of foam, wool, or similar materials.

So, I would stop at around 5” of foam. If you need more than that, it’s better to switch to an all-foam mattress.

Novaform is primarily a foam company. Their 16.5” Platinum Luxury model includes 6” coils, but I would rather buy a 11” all-foam mattress than that 16.5” hybrid.

Most of the hybrid DIY mattresses tend to have 2 to 5" foam. With Quadmini, I use just 3" with the Premium stretch cover, which doesn’t have any foam/wool quilted. Just 2" LMF soft Talalay + 1" 4lb memory foam. Even any Walmart cheap convoluted foam along with Latex layer would do.
