First time mattress buyer - looking for non toxic

Hello all,

I have looking into getting my first real mattress and want to avoid any cheaply massed produced mattress as I already get poor sleep.

I am looking for non toxic as I have severe chemical sensitivity. So no offgassing is big for me.
I am severely overnight 5’3 265 pounds , have sleep apnea (I use a cpap) and am a belly sleeper with my face out to the side , not in the pillow.

I have heard that firmer is better for stomach sleepers but I also don’t want something that presses too hard on my stomach , I recently slept on a hard fouton that made it harder to breath while sleeping on my stomach.

I was looking at the latex beds and looking at the sleeponlatex , but it says it’s only 8 inches tall and some forums say that I taller bed (10-12inch+) is better for heavier folks that need more support.

I have been looking at the base models from avocado, sleepolatex and birch and want to be under $2000, anyone have any ideas ?

I am very new to this topic so any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your support.

If I were you I’d give DIY a chance. The main thing you need to make sure of is that you have a very strong base layer. You can still have cushioning on the top as long as you aren’t sinking in too far. I don’t think the springs in the base models of those brands would hold up well for your weight. It’s a fine line between making sure the bed is comfortable for your stomach but also able to hold up your weight.

One aspect to note is that majority of mattresses these days are made without toxic chemicals so although they may have a scent there won’t be anything toxic like VOC’s

This is the build I’d recommend from top to bottom:

Cotton wool blend cover, 13" tall
3" medium blended latex
1" firm latex
8" 14.75g quadcoils (stronger than their 15.5g model)
1" firm dunlop latex

The latex and cover can be bought from mattresses.net and the springs are from pocketspringstore.com
The firm latex can be bought in the form of Dunlop latex from sleeponlatex on Amazon

The build cost of this would be somewhere around $1300. If you needed to make a modification afterwards you’d have the ability to do so.

What would be involved in the assembly of the mattress?

All you have to do is put the cover on the frame, lay the 1" firm down, then put the springs into the cover, then the other 1" firm latex on top, then the 3" and then zip up the cover around everything. You would need help to move the components of course mainly the springs.

Part of me is thinking to suggest a 2" top layer instead of the 3" because you could always add another 1" and a 2" is just easier to work with. People on the Internet can only get so close but that’s why the option of DIY is so great, as you lay on the bed you get a feel for what exactly you want. Just keep in mind in order to have enough support you need to have a firm strong base otherwise the bed will hammock and become very uncomfortable.

You’ll need to become accustomed to a strong base, but what you can modify are the layers that are on top. You just need to make sure the top layers are not too deep because that could also cause you to sink in too far. You want to get your bed comfortable, as well as not overly soft within a range of 4" of layers on top of the bed and preferably no more than 5".

For example sometimes I wanted my bed to be more plush. I’d place a wool topper on it. Other times I wouldn’t so there would just be a layer of latex.

Hey Moabler.

Welcome to the Mattress Forum

I have a couple options that immediately came to mind but, before I dive into anything, are you looking for a queen sized bed? Or a different size?

This will affect budget and whether the recommendations I have in mind actually apply

Hi Nikki,

This would be a king size bed.
