I’m a side sleeper, incredibly active (I roll around ALOT), run very hot, weigh 200lbs and am 5’8. I’m seeking a full size mattress for around $1500 that can help in alleviating some lower back pain issues I’ve been having and keep me cool.
Thus far my understanding is that I should be shopping for a hybrid foam-coil mattress, as memory foam would make me hotter and pure coils would not keep my spine straight.
I am currently between two options, the Helix Midnight Luxe and the Bear Elite Hybrid. As far as I can tell, the Bear would provide better cooling (the midnight luxe requires additional add-ons to accommodate for that) and the Helix would provide better support.
If anyone could assist in pushing me towards one or the other I’d be grateful, or perhaps if there are other options I haven’t considered you could recommend them. I am leaning towards the Bear mostly because of the price and emphasis on cooling but after reading a bit further into it some reviews concerning how great the Helix feels are making me second guess myself.
A $1500 budget for a full size gives you many options. Both are great but if I was in your position between those two I’d pick the Helix with the tencel cover. My main reasoning is naplab tested both, the helix got a 9.43 and bear got 9.16. the helix has a 2" 4lb memory foam layer while the bear uses another inch of soft foam in the quilt. They will feel similar to one another.
Other choices I’d recommend:
Nest and wild hybrid - $820 after current coupon (my personal favorite) - has a PCM cooling cover and open cell breathable latex/memory hybrid foam for the top layer. 15 year warranty, good solid support with a medium firmness. This has a different type of feel than a bed with a stitched soft foam top but is still a Goldilocks mattress that covers all the aspects for a very affordable price.
Glacier apex medium - $1100 with current coupon, uses nylon in the cover for cooling, has a plush slight memory foam feel but also supportive. I have not tried the bear elite but this feels fairly similar to the midnight luxe I tried in store. For that feel specifically I’d pick the apex over either the helix or bear.
Id recommend the glacier apex over the bear elite and helix tbh because first of all it’s $500 less expensive. It feels amazing. The nest and wild does also feel amazing and is $800 less.
At 200 lbs sleeping on your side, you need deep pressure relief for your shoulders and hips to prevent lower back misalignments, but enough underlying support so your midsection doesn’t sink too far.
