Frozen latex mattress

Hi,
I recently bought a very expensive 9 inch Latex Mattress of Talalay and Dunlop from Savvy Rest.

I had the boxes shipped to me in Wisconsin first. And then I returned to Europe where I am currently living, I am having them shipped to me overseas.

So all went well until my friend who was shipping them for me, said he needed to store them in his garage. They are shrink wrapped and in the original boxes, plus I added a ton of strong tape to make the boxes even stronger to survive the trip. But it is really really cold in Wisconsin right now! I am just sick, did I ruin my bed? Is freezing the Talalay and Dunlop in 0 degrees ruining the mattress?

Thanks for your help!!!
Kate

Hi Kate55.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Generally speaking, a latex mattress can withstand colder temperatures than most other types of mattresses, but it is possible for the material to freeze. This tends to happens when the mattress is stored in an unheated space for an extended period of time, such as - like you mentioned - a garage or a storage unit. If you think your latex mattress may have frozen, there are a few things you can do to thaw it out.

If the frozen latex is still in its original packaging, you can try thawing it out gradually by placing it in a warm room. This is your best bet - there are other options but those include exposing your latex to warm water which I’d avoid.

Once thawed out, make sure you dry the mattress completely before using it. If your latex mattress freezes and you’re unable to thaw it out so it can expand properly, unfortunately you’ll need to replace it. However, this type of damage is rare and generally only happens under extreme weather circumstances and is more likely to occur with an unprotected mattress.

Hi NikkiTMU,

Thank you for your welcome!!! I am thrilled to discover this forum and I only wish I had found it earlier.

I never in a million years thought I would be in a position where my dream bed is stuck in freezing conditions. And I can’t ship it for at least another week.

So it is really a relief to hear that it might be ok. I am hoping for the best!

Thank you for everything you do. And I will let you know what happens. Happiest of holidays to you!!!

Take care,
Kate
