Full Latex- overwhelmed

I am getting ready to go full latex and am feeling overwhelmed by all the research I have done both on the forum and on the various factory webpages. Here’s where I am at currently-

This will be the 3rd bed for my husband and I, we have tried mem foam, traditional innerspring flippable (Verlo), and now a latex hybrid (Avocado), all have been okay but as we age they no longer work for us. Current mattress is the avocado eco and while it was good at first, its just not anymore, we have chronic lumbar and upper back pain despite proper turning and a solid base. The softening is just- too soft now. There are areas now where I “sink” in a hole (don’t know how else to describe that) and others where I am supported, I can only think that some of the coils are failing since the comfort layer is on the thin side and the sinking is deep.

We really prefer a firm mattress with a bit of extra cushioning for pressure points. We are also tired of changing our mattress every 3-5 years. I would like to find one that will last for 10-20 years with minor modifications in regards to comfort. I am also tired of body impressions that eventually feel like a squishy hole and climbing uphill to find some support. Even when they are considered “normal” they are uncomfortable for us; its the sinking feeling and high/lows they create…….Flippable has always been my past choice for even wear and longevity, but have increasingly moved towards latex as the best/most supportive, and lasting option among modern beds.

And here we are… I am frozen in choosing what company to get my mattress from. I want firm support, I know that much, but are the layers flippable? Turnable? Can I swap if its just not quite right? We don’t have anyone here that sells full latex to my knowledge (I am in four corners area) so I can’t try anything out first. My biggest concern other than our health and comfort is not being here again in 5 years.

About us- my husband is 6 ft 190 and has bad hips- he needs consistent firm support. I am 5’6 and 145 and I also like firm support with a little cushion for comfort. I sleep Hot, so that is a big consideration too. We are both side and back sleepers. We like our space, and have a king bed, and don’t like the inevitable middle ridge, so a flippable/ replaceable layer option is very appealing to alleviate this issue while keeping the support intact.

What have others tried that was successful? Who is able to assist us best with both dialing in the right mattress and backing their promises up? Which latex type in each layer is going to achieve our goals of a long term mattress with the tweaks needed to keep us sleeping well? (the science of latex and the hows/whats/feels is still a bit confusing to me) Do we go hard and swap toppers to avoid the dreaded hammock effect?

I have researched some of the partners on here but hesitate as to whom to contact for next steps.

Hi Slumpy and thank you so much for reaching out on this! You might want to consider the 10” organic mattress by Sleep EZ - https://sleepez.com/product/organic-latex-mattress/

The organic and natural mattresses (the Select Sleep mattresses) are our flagship products. They’re fully customizable, meaning you can order the mattress to be as soft or as firm as you’d like. They’re also fully adjustable, meaning you can change the softness, firmness, back support, pressure relief, etc. AFTER you get the mattress in your home. To be more specific, the 10” is our most popular, and these mattresses normally go out with three 3" layers of different firmnesses - normally the softest layer (or the cushion & contour layer) is on top and the supportive layers are on the bottom. This helps ensure our customers get the right balance of contour for their hips and shoulders but also support for their lower back. If you start with a certain setup and find that it’s too soft, you can unzip the cover and rearrange the layers to get a firmer feel out of the mattress, or you can exchange a layer to make it softer. Additionally, latex mattresses typically last 20 years. If, in 5 or 10 or 15 years you decide you want a softer or firmer mattress you would only have to buy a new layer instead of an entirely new mattress. Lastly, if the mattress starts to break down in 15 – 20 years, it’s normally the top layer that breaks down first, and at that point you can likely just buy a new top layer of latex instead of a whole new mattress and get an additional 8-10 years out of the mattress.

Furthermore, queen, king, and cal king mattresses are available with what we call “split layers,” which means you can have us cut the layers down the middle (from head to foot) so that you can have a different feel / firmness on your side versus your partner’s side, and you can adjust each side independently over the 20 year lifetime of the mattress. About 95% of our mattresses go out with all split layers from top to bottom, and we get zero complaints on being able to feel the split and we get zero complaints about the layers shifting or anything like that, even if you sleep right on the middle of the mattress.

If you’re wondering how to pick the layers for this mattress, you can go to the natural or organic mattress page, click the green button that says “Build Your Mattress Now,” then click the gray oval that says “Personalized,” and you’ll be able to enter your information. The website will then make a personalized recommendation based on your information (the layers in the mattress diagram will reflect the recommendation after you click the “Apply” button. Please note that our initial recommendations have a 90% success rate (we only have a 10% layer exchange rate) so there’s a 90% chance that the recommendation turns out to be your perfect setup!

Although it’s not likely that you’ll need to rearrange layers or exchange layers, you certainly have the option to adjust the mattress according to you and your partner’s specific needs and preferences, both in the short-term and long-term. We have a 90 day exchange and return period, so you can exchange a layer within the first 90 days for a flat-rate $30 fee for the first exchange and the full cost of shipping for any subsequent exchanges. We will ship your layers first, and we will ship them with extra plastic that you can use to package your current layers, and we will ship it with a pre-paid Fed Ex return label. Also, if you will please call us when you are ready to ship your layers back we will schedule a free Fed Ex pick up for you. You will have 30 days after its arrival to return a layer of your choosing, so you’ll have plenty of time to try a few different combinations with the layers you have and the layer we will be sending you so that you can get your comfort and support levels just right.

Slumpy, thanks for reaching out to this forum. Your issues are very common which is why we always emphasis getting a mattress with a zippered cover which gives you access to the layers. This way you get much more durability by rotating and flipping the inner layers. I prefer to work directly with our customers to insure getting the proper layers based on height, weight, sleeping style, age and injuries. Having all that info will help me guide you into the best fit our 28 years of online experience has to offer so please reach out to me personally at 888-773-7326 or visit our website https://mattresses.net Thanks again for reaching out.

Thanks for the quick and detailed responses, I will review the information this evening and reach out with any questions I have; a side note is that I have done the sleep quizzes on various sites and the one issue I have is that because of my size and mixed sleeping positions it automatically suggests a softer feel than I actually prefer. I am sure that can be remedied if this is the direction we choose to take?

Sleep quizzes can be useful as a general guide to help navigate the options a mattress company offers, particularly in understanding how they categorize firmness levels based on common sleep positions and body types. However, it’s important to recognize that these tools are designed around broad assumptions, general common thoughts about mattress preferences and typical rules of thumb, but may not always reflect individual preferences or needs.

In many cases, someone with a larger frame or who sleeps in mixed positions may be directed toward a softer mattress, even if that doesn’t align with what they personally find comfortable. Most people have a general understanding of what feels right for them based on past experience, and that kind of self-knowledge often outweighs what an automated quiz suggests.

Additionally, these quizzes typically don’t account for critical factors like foam density, types of natural materials, construction techniques, or how a mattress will perform over time in terms of durability and support. While a quiz might point to a certain comfort level, it shouldn’t be seen as a definitive recommendation. Instead, it can serve as a starting point for further exploration, keeping in mind that true comfort and long-term satisfaction depend on more than just sleep position or body type.

Hi thanks for that, I presumed as much but everything is so “online” now which leaves something to be desired as everyone is so individual in their actual likes and dislikes. I am small framed but like a med firm to firm sleeping surface which is out of the norm it seems. I miss the old days of hard beds and a separate topper for cushion lol

I too am in this process (2.5 months in) and getting the layers right was harder than I thought! Still experimenting..

Curious, are you on full latex? If so what brand mattress are you tinkering with and what has been your experience so far?

I am! So far just avocado and sleep on latex. Avocado is much more squishy and soft (even though I ordered Dunlop) and sleep on latex much more dense + their customer service is awesome. I’m just trying to get the right build and it takes time, patience, and loss of sleep which is not fun!

GTK thank you- we also had issues with our avocado being too soft. Still calling around to get a feel for the companies I put on the short list, and my husband is leery of all latex so am gathering more intel!

I had to return my avocado green mattress right at the 30 day mark- it was such a bad mattress for me! So now I am building my own, which is quite the project when it comes to perfecting it, but at least it will be customized to my needs.

Update- after a lot of agonizing, research, conversations and my husband’s input/ preferences we decided against full latex (again lol) and went with a Back Science mattress. Once we’ve received our mattress I’ll be sure to provide another update, on a separate post, but for now we are excited to find out if it’s as good of a fit as we think/ hope :crossed_fingers:

Update- 4 months later- we LOVE this mattress. So far it is the right balance of support and comfort. The support is… firm, yay! My husband’s back issues are no longer. And me? Comfortable, though it did take me longer to adjust to it. Now that I have, I wouldn’t trade. Time will tell, but you can definitely feel the quality in this mattress. I’ll update again as more time goes by, but thought this would be helpful for others searching for reviews on the BS2.

It is so wonderful you finally found a mattress that truly works for you both! :raising_hands: That perfect balance of firm support and comfort is such a win, especially with your husband’s back issues improving. Love that it grew on you too and now feels like a keeper. Thanks for sharing such a thoughtful update; reviews like this really do help others on the hunt. :tada:
