I just wanted to run my plan by some people in the know to see if there is anything obvious I am forgetting.
I am planning on getting a bed frame from ultimatebed (ultimatebed.com). Does anyone have experience or opinions on them? Everything about it seems great (long warranty, small family business, great customer service from the several times I have called and e-mailed with them).
I am going to be using the under-bed dressed with a deluxe platform. I want to make sure this will be compatible with my mattress.
The mattress I am planning on getting is the Original Deluxe Latex Mattress from Flodbeds. The two things I am wanting to make sure of is
a) will the ultimatebed bedframe provide the correct support? Looking at the construction it seems like it provides good support, including in the middle.
b) airflow – on the ultimatebed website it often shows the mattress as sitting directly in the deluxe platform. I understand this is not ideal for latex since you want airflow below the mattress. As such I asked and was told the lip that runs around the edge is 2.5 inches. So if I get a 3-5 inch slat foundation to go with the mattress and put THAT in the deluxe platform with the mattress on top of that, will that provide adequate air flow?
Those are the two questions I thought of, but are there any other things I am forgetting?
This looks to be a very sturdy piece of furniture and I would not have a concern with a latex mattress placed upon their deluxe platform.
It appears that they offer a standard plywood deck and a deluxe (with the lip around the perimeter). You are considering the deluxe.
A coir bed rug would actually be a common product to place under your mattress in such a situation. This would provide adequate ventilation and at only 1" thick still allow you to take advantage of the wood lip around the perimeter to keep your mattress in place. You could also choose a low profile foundation, but my personal preference would be the bed rug or something similar.

Thanks, Phoenix. I appreciate the help. As far as airflow goes, if I used the coir bed rug, that would only lift the mattress 1 inch and the lip around it is 2.5 inches. Wouldn’t that mean that the bottom of the mattress was still sealed in all the way around and so wouldn’t get any air flow? Or am I thinking about air flow the wrong way? I was thinking to get any airflow I would need to actually make sure the mattress was raised above the top of the lip.
Your thoughts are certainly good ones. The biggest concern with the airflow is the bottom of the mattress, which is definitely in contact with the plywood deck 100% and it’s difficult for air to circulate under that product without something like a bed rug and there is the potential for humidity to become “trapped” there (poor air exchange) as well.
As for the sides of the mattress, they wouldn’t be as much in contact with the small lip around the perimeter of the platform bed in question and wouldn’t be as tightly pressed against the side lip, so there would be better air circulation along the sides and to the bottom, and with movement in and out of the bed it would not be nearly as much of a concern for me. I’d prefer the extra security of having that small lip to keep my mattress in place over the slight loss in air flow. However, if you are inn a high humidity environment and you do truly desire to have maximum air flow, then the low profile foundation would certainly expose more of the mattress to air exchange.
