Is it customary to haggle on mattresses? With the amount of discounts that seem to be blindly thrown around, I assume it would be naive not to. What about at smaller, local manufacturers?

I can only speak for us. We only offer discounts when clients purchase more than one mattress, topper or bed frame at the same time. Our prices already include taxes and we pay shipping on most orders. Furthermore TMU members can save an extra 3% by using The Mattress Underground coupon code TMUD%
As for big box stores I think that would depend on their price policies. You are correct in stating that they throw around discounts, so it’s best to wait until they have a sale if you want to buy from them.
As for smaller local manufacturers, some of them may be opened to offering you a discount, you have nothing to loose in asking!
