Harrison Spinks decision: Leicester return vs new Northumberland

Hi everyone, new member here looking for some guidance.

I’m deciding between two Harrison Spinks mattresses at my local store, and I’d love input from people who know more about these than I do.

Option 1: Northumberland – brand new, full 10-year warranty (full price). I can’t try it in person though—the store no longer stocks this model, so it would be a special order from the US distributor.

Option 2: Leicester – a return that’s currently on the floor, no warranty, (35% off due to being a return, making it roughly the same price as the other model). I’ve seen it in person and it looked to be in good condition—no visible issues. I don’t know why it was returned.

On paper, the Leicester seems like the better mattress (horsehair, cashmere, 28k springs vs 15k), and at this price it’s a significant value. But giving up the warranty on a mattress at this price makes me nervous. On the other hand, at least I can actually see and test the Leicester before buying.

For those familiar with Harrison Spinks quality and construction: How much risk am I really taking on a returned Leicester without warranty? Are these mattresses durable enough that a visual inspection is sufficient, or is the warranty protection worth sticking with?

Basically… If you were me, what would you do?

Beck,

I think most warranties are essentially worthless….they dont want to replace anything.

I definitely would not buy anything sight unseen unless there is a return policy.

I would just focus on the Leicester which you can try. I would disregard any notions of “its a great deal” or “its a return closeout”….dont let that effect you. If you get a screaming deal on an uncomfortable mattress….you have wasted your money. Dont let price influence you in any way.

Are you in USA or not?
What are the prices of the mattresses?

John

Hello John,

Thank you for the solid advice and perspective.

It’s in the US, yes, and the prices are as follows:

If you like the Leicester…..get it. But be open minded to other models and brands.
