So I seem to be hitting a dead end on sourcing the pocket spring layer I want for my DIY mattress project. Next option is to make my own calico pocket spring layer.
Has anyone done this before using springs bought or harvested from an existing mattress?
Questions;
Does anyone suggest a place to buy loose springs 15.5g and 13.5g for edge support?
If I want the height of the coil layer to be 4in, would I use 6in springs? Finished 5in coil layer, use 7in springs? Ect…
Would I need to side tuft the final mattress or could I treat it like any other DIY coil layer?
I have not had much experience with calico pocket springs except to say, I was under the impression that the “calico” part was the all natural cotton cover used on the individual springs, not the springs themselves.
Regarding harvesting springs from an existing mattress. Sometimes the unknown can be very costly. You harvest a spring layer, create and build a mattress and one bad spring takes down your entire project with no recourse, except to replace the spring (if individual) and the layers that it compromised. Sure this can happen with a brand new spring support layer, but it is more likely to happen on springs that have been used and no way to test them, where as we would like to assume that a brand new set has not been compromised.
Hopefully you will find your answer that you are looking for in this question and response.
