Having trouble deciding which latex/pocketed coils mattress to buy

I believe I’m down to two mattress choices, but I’m nervous about making this choice. So I wanted to share some relevant details to see if I’m leaning in the right direction, and also if I’m missing any other possibilities - particularly less expensive options for what I like (soft latex over pocketed coils).

After visiting Gardner Mattress (which I never even knew about until I came here!), I confirmed my suspicions that I would probably like a latex mattress over pocketed coils. Gardner only uses Talalay latex. I found that I liked the softest latex, but I have back problems. I think it was fine, though, in terms of the support it offered. The problem is that it’s over my budget. And I was also trying them out so that I would have more information about buying a mattress online. The only other place I’m seeing a similar mattress is Sleep EZ. Initially, I was considering their Select Sleep Hybrid, which is $995. But it only comes in medium/firm (you flip it to get either medium or firm). So a rep there suggested that the 360 would be a better fit for me. So that’s another $250 (it’s $1250), but still significantly less than the one at Gardner.

I’m wondering if I should make the leap and buy the Sleep EZ mattress. The only other place I went to try out mattresses was Jordan’s Furniture and the young sales rep dropped me like a hot potato once he realized that I knew stuff about mattresses. I liked their Prana Sky mattress, but it only had 1" of latex and that was under foam.

Part of me wants to go with the mattress I already tried and liked at Gardner, but that one is $1450 plus a $50 delivery charge. I don’t know if I’ll like the Sleep EZ mattress, but I now know that I like soft Talalay latex over pocketed coils. And Sleep EZ has some good policies about exchanging layers. Also, someone actually wrote a review this month on the Sleep EZ site about getting the 360 with the soft Talalay topper and how it helped his back pain and he loves it. And he thanked TMU also. :slight_smile:

I haven’t had a chance to try Dunlop, but the only place I can do that is a very expensive local place and I know I’ll feel uncomfortable going in there and faking it.

So my questions are:

  • [li]I’m inclined to take a chance and get the Sleep EZ 360mattress - does it seem like I’m leaning in the right direction? If I really dislike it, I can return it for $100, which I hope I don’t have to do, but it does take away some of the risk.

    Am I missing any less expensive options for soft latex over pocketed coils? I see less expensive options for medium and firm latex over pocketed coils but none for soft.

    Are there any concerns about getting the soft latex with back problems?[/li]

I’m realizing that we should be listing our height and weight. I’m 5’2" and I’m usually 141 lbs although I gained a few pandemic pounds and was up to 149 last I checked. And I have chronic back pain.

I wish I could edit my initial post, but I just discovered another mattress that sounds perfect! Flexus’s Quadra-Flex. This mattress would allow me to get the soft latex over pocketed coils that I want, but for a lot less money! It’s just $895 for the full-sized mattress. I was wondering why the other companies didn’t offer an option to get a top layer of soft latex.

My only concern is whether the soft latex (Talalay with this mattress, which is the only kind I’ve been able to find) is okay for someone with chronic lower back issues. At Gardner Matress, it was by far the most comfortable, especially on my pressure points. My shoulders and hips have been so uncomfortable with the Level Sleep mattress and at Gardner, the medium and firm mattresses were still not comfortable on those pressure points.

Sleep EZ’s sister company, also a Trusted Member, Latex Mattress Factory, is all DIY so you can select the type of top layers above the coil base. The price may be higher than Flexus, though.

Thank you! I’ll check that out. Although I’m inclined to go with Flexus at this point - even though I’ve heard such great things about Sleep EZ and they’ve been very responsive to my questions. If they had a soft layer for their other hybrid mattress, I would certainly consider going with them.
