Healthy Childrens Mattress

I am looking for a very healthy (chemical free, natural) mattress for a 4 year old, 40 lbs child that will grow with them! I would like it to last until college  I already have a naturepedic for my other child, it is nice, although a little basic. I am looking for a full size mattress that is “reasonable” in price, hopefully less expensive than the naturepedic, otherwise I will just go with that.

I am curious to get some feedback on the naturepedic 2 in 1 ultra ($999) vs the my green mattress pure echo organic ($714). I am not overly knowledgeable about mattresses, so would appreciate knowing if people thought they were similar mattresses, but the echo was a better “value”. Are there any others I should consider?

Also, has anyone purchased a natural latex mattress for a young child? Have they had any issues with allergies? Any recommended providers for the most natural latex mattresses at a good price point?

Thank You!

Hi Davidson,

Post #2 here should be helpful and includes links to more information and some of the better posts and threads about about children and mattresses in the forum and more information about some of the better options for children’s mattresses I’m aware of.

Both of the mattresses you mentioned use high quality materials that would work well for a child but they are different from each other. the Naturepedic uses an innerspring and cotton batting while the My Green Mattress Echo uses an innerspring and cotton and wool and has the option of latex and a two sided construction and for most people would be better value out of the two (based on the materials inside it). My Green Mattress is a member of this site which means that I believe they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of quality, value, and service.

There is more about latex allergies in post #2 here but a latex allergy would be very uncommon in a mattress because there is no contact with the latex in the mattress so the only allergy of concern would be a type I allergy which would be very rare and would require significant precautions in many areas of life besides just a mattress because rubber is so common in our society.

There are many members here that have purchased a latex mattress for their children and been very happy with them. Latex is also very durable so when the time comes that children mature and begin to develop into adulthood and may need a softer sleeping surface the mattress will still be very likely to be in good condition without any significant softening or breakdown so you can just add a topper for any additional softness they may need and they will probably be fine until it’s time for them to leave home.

I just wanted to update, I decided to check out Spindle Mattress yesterday to see what the fuss is about latex, fully expecting to dislike it due to disliking memory foam. Took the whole family as we live 30 mins from the Spindle showroom. I was completely blown away. Turns out latex is my be all and end all  Neal suggested a wonderful 7" bed for my child with 2x3" layers of natural Dunlop latex and a quilted top with natural wool for an affordable price. In fact, it is less expensive than the my green mattress echo organic. To me this decision was a no-brainer. I am placing an order today for my first latex mattress for my 4 year old and my other child and my husband and I are completely jealous. For once in my mattress buying life I feel like I’m not getting fleeced. Thank you Spindle Mattress!

Hi Davidson,

Thanks for the update … and I think that there are probably a lot of people who confuse latex and memory foam (thinking that all “foam” is similar) when as you discovered they are very different from each other.

I think you made a great choice … and your kids are certainly fortunate.

Congratulations on your new mattress

Hi Davidson. I went to Spindle this past Saturday with my almost three year old son to get him his first big boy bed. Like you I was very concerned about the chemicals used in most mattresses. We ended up going with the Full 10" Abscond blend with the synthetic foam cover. We got a firm. Neal stated that we might be able to get a little more life out of the mattress if we went with the firm and rotated the latex pieces over the years. He also suggested that the 10" would be be preferable to the 7" if we wanted to have our son be able to grow into the mattress as an adult. I’m curious why you went with the 7" if that was a concern of your’s as well.

Are you going to be getting some type of waterproof cover Davidson? My son is not fully potty trained and I thought it might be a good idea to get a cover.

Neal seemed like a very nice guy and very knowledgeable. He took the time to meet with us on a Saturday and answer all of our questions. I tested them out as well as my son. My wife and I have a 9 year old innerspring that will need to be replaced in the next several years. I tried the soft, medium and firm and I could sleep on any of them but my wife likes a soft mattress which would be the firm with a topper. She wasn’t able to go with us but we’ll be going back so that she can try it out for herself. I agree with you that the overall experience was far superior to not only previous mattress buying experiences but pretty much all purchasing experiences. Neal was not “salesy” in the least. I’d also done my homework on this site and through other sources to educate myself about latex and the mattress market. I feel like I got a pretty good deal.

We ordered the bed with Neal during our visit on Saturday and it should be arriving on Wednesday or Thursday. If my son will let me I’m going to sleep on it a night or two with him just to try it out. I will be posting updates to let everyone know how it works out over time.

Hi NHdad,

I agree that this would be very important if not “essential”. Post #89 here and the posts it links to have more information about the different types of mattress protectors that may be helpful.

I’m looking forward to your feedback when you receive it … and congratulations on your new mattress

Phoenix.

I just finished setting it up a little over an hour ago. My son is already fast asleep on it. He took an immediately liking to it. He had all his books and stuffed animals spread out. I think I’ll let him get used to it and then try it with him either this weekend or next.

Hi NHdad,

Thanks for the update … that sure didn’t take long
