I’ve been reading here on and off over the past few days, so I figured I’d finally create and account, so… hi!
Anyhoo, I’ve currently got a Bear Hybrid. Loved it for a while, but last year I had to have them send me a replacement top layer of foam. I’m 5’10", 190 lbs, so not overweight and my wife is 5’6" and 134. The top layer started sagging to the point where we were both having back pain. As a bonus, I got to have shoulder pain, too! Suffice to say, the new layer they sent was firmer, so I was excited… until the past few months…
IWe’re back to having back pain. I still get the bonus shoulder pain plus my hips just hurt… I’m an active guy, too, which is why we bought the Bear mattress. We thought it would be great for our lifestyle and it was, for a time. Now it just sucks.
I’m a back sleeper primarily and my wife is a side sleeper, so I’m trying to find something that will work for both of us. Basically, I’m looking for thoughts and suggestions. I’ve been doing research for the past few weeks and have found that Luma and Ghostbed both seem to have great options, but I’m curious as to what others may think!
Welcome to The Mattress Underground ! My apologies for the late reply, your post was hidden after a spammer commented over you. Let’s get to your question.
I’m sorry that you and your wife experienced back pain, as well as your shoulder pain. Just curious as to what you describe here regarding the mattress, Pete; when you say that the top layer started sagging and that Bear sent a replacement layer, are you referring to layers 1 and 2/ the cover and gel foam in the uppermost layers or 3, the first foam layer? This doesn’t appear to be a removable cover. Was the replacement layer something that went over the top of the mattress encasement? It’s probably a moot point now but I’m trying to understand the source of the pain that you’re describing.
That is disappointing news to hear that you now have added hip pain among the other A’s & P’s, Pete. Bear offers a product line of firmer-feeling mattresses aimed at the consumer performance industry, and their 3 models range from medium to medium-firm in their comfort and support feel. How long have you had your Bear Hybrid? What size is your mattress? What type of foundation are you using?
What mattress were you using before your Bear Hybrid? Do you prefer hybrid mattresses and the combination of foam + pocket coils overall? Thanks for considering trusted members GhostBed, they both offer hybrid mattresses of similar construction to your current mattress but with some different options. Luma’s Natural Latex Hybrid mattress could be a good fit for you both, based on your personal stats; however, it uses Natural latex or Talalay latex as a comfort material. Your Bear Hybrid uses memory foam as a comfort material, a polar-opposite comfort feel from latex. If you prefer the “hug”-like quality of memory foam, you may prefer one of GhostBeds’ models. Both their Flex and 3D Matrix hybrids use memory foam as a comfort material, but the 3D Matrix seems somewhat softer than what you’re used to with your Bear. As it’s been quite a while since your post, you may have already made a choice. Have you found any candidates yet?
Good luck with your research and let us know which way you decide .
