Help! After four mattresses still can't find one that works

I’ve had a terrible time finding a mattress. I am 61, 5’4" and 117 lb woman with intermittent low back and neck pain. Can be completely fine for a year or more. Usually have one bad flare up a year. Side and back sleeper. Mostly side, but I do turn on back and I have at times slept on back with head elevated (for example when sick.)
I had perfect mattress set up for me: very very firm older mattress with 2" latex topper (likely Talalay but not sure). Had to get rid of it due to odor after 8 years. I’ve tried:
1.Airloom Riviera–Very expensive but most comfortable overall. However, the tufting indentations were almost as big as one of my glutes so didn’t work because put my back in too much extension. Also it was so heavy it was almost impossible to make the bed.
2. Sleep on Latex firm (was too firm and 8-9" way too low). Decided against trying differing configurations because ordering online made it so difficult to get mattress from door to bed. I had to hire guys to move the mattress each time. I might go back to this route though.
3. More traditional Beautyrest Black L (basically firm with memory foam and a little tufting). Feels okay but back not getting better, feels too soft on the surface. I sink in too much. It’s hot. And, it is STILL outgassing after almost four months. One week left to return it.
4. European Sleepworks (Bay Area) hybrid latex mattress with tufting. Supposedly the firmest version of the coils, but I found the top layer way too soft. Slept two nights and that was it for me.
CONCLUSIONS:

  • No Tufting
  • No micro springs (I think in European Sleepworks bed)
  • Need firm mattress with a top that gives but not too much. Not necessarily hybrid unless I create it myself.
  • Want at least a 11" high
  • Need softer but not too soft upper layer–probably 2’ latex but on top of something really firm again.
Should I go back to trying to get mattress online? It’s a significant hassle and I’m left without a mattress if I return Beautyrest and try this all over again. How do I recreate my beloved original bed set up?
What brand / model of mattress would have NO pillow top and just be a regular very firm quilted mattress? I could put topper on it and try that.

Or if I stay with latex layers, What should I try? I was happy with Sleep on Latex and many seem to say products are good quality. If I order from Sleep on Latex, what layers should I order to make the bed taller? I like the feel of latex better than memory foam.

Thank you in advance!

I completely understand the challenges you are experiencing and would be happy to help! As Doctor of Chiropractic and someone that has worked on designing, testing and working hand and hand with thousands of customers over 20+ years, I get the privilege of working direct with thousands of customers thanks to our flagship Ultrabed mattress store location in Southern California and I can tell you from my many customer interactions, that I understand why you are having the difficulties with the mattresses you are trying. The problem comes down to the fact that you need to allow some surface comfort, but you don’t do well when you sink too far into a mattress, especially if that mattress is missing additional lumbar type zoning.

The mattress I helped create called Back Science does bridge that gap that is found when traditional spring mattresses and latex or memory foam mattresses won’t solve the problem that is required when someone requires more pressure relief, but does not want to sink in too much and gets hot. The Back Science mattress offers more structured lumbar support through its double zoned, patent pending Lumbar-Flex interlocking support that was specifically tested with the Mattress Checker App. to objectively verify that your postural alignment will be properly maintained in order to help prevent the lower back from sinking too deeply, while allowing more pressure on the shoulders, which can lead discomfort and potential back problems over time. The Back Science Mattress is something I created after many years of seeing patients who suffered from back and shoulder issues due to poor mattress support and was developed by specifically performing hundreds of postural checks using the App. to really ensure that it works.

Another difference comes from the quality of the coils and density of the foams used. With Back Science, we are using extremely high-quality, all U.S.A. made components, such as our over 1,000 count individually wrapped coils and is a true hybrid system that uses a Hypergel foam on the surface, which will give that weightless pressure relief, but with a much more buoyant/springy surface that differs substantially from memory foam and has a support more akin with latex, but is far more contouring than a traditional quilted cover and therefore, more pressure relieving on the hips and shoulders. It does have a feel that is closer to latex, but our customers were the decision makers as to why we did not use latex, since they preferred the Hypergel in every test we ran. In your case, I really believe that the Back Science Series 2 would be perfect for relieving pressure and allowing your shoulders to still sink in, while preventing the low back from hammocking inward. Of course, you will need to use a proper pillow to ensure you create enough support based on how much you sink into the mattress in order for you to relieve the pressure on the neck. With that said, while the majority of Back Science customers find the mattress fits their needs perfectly, Back Science also has the advantage of being customizable, should you the mattress not perfectly suit your needs.

Regarding the mattress causing your body to heat-up, you will be happy to know that our Back Science Hybrid Series mattresses all use our patented Airflow Transfer System that allows air to ventilate through the thousands of small holes in the top foam layers and channel out the sides, while allowing the reverse to also occur in order to get up to 100 Xs more breathability. According to a recent TrustPilot.org Survey, 96% of the respondents were cooler on Back Science than their last mattress.

I hope that helps explain things, but feel free to write back if you have any questions, You can reach me back at this forum or email us direct. Also, if you do purchase a Back Science mattress, be sure to use the 10% off TMU10 discount code we give to The Mattress Underground members.
