Hi all, it’s been a while since I posted here since we were alright with our brentwood home crystal cove mattress and our luma base for a little while… Since then we (I am 5’7 165 lb back and side sleeper and my wife is 5’7 and 149 lb side sleeper) are looking for a better fit… We inherited my grandmother’s cherry king sized bed frame…
There are a number of challenges we are encountering trying to find a new mattress… right now we are using a friends Dreamcloud mattress on top of our old luma foundation that we both agree is too soft for us and is hurting our backs. One of the issues is that the luma + dreamcloud is approximately 22.5 inches tall, but it seems as though the cherry headboard is only made to accommodate a total of 14.5 inches. I did notice that luma makes a 5" slatted foundation so maybe this would be a start in that department…
The next problem is that I have severe GERD and I’m tired of using a wedge to alleviate the issue… I was thinking a split king would allow me to slant the mattress itself without bothering my wife… but I’m open to other solutions
The last thing is that we are definitely trying to avoid VOCs and plastics, but also we don’t really like foam mattresses because they tend to wear quickly (this is just my experience, no matter the quality of the foam)… we would prefer something with springs to supplement whatever kind of padding we get… Are latex mattresses going to give us the little extra boost in firmness that we kind of desire?
I checked out the Avocado split king, but it seemed to be approximately 6198 dollars which is probably like double what we can afford… So does anyone have any suggestions?

Most split kings these days are housed in a single encasement and often share a base layer (like a high density foam or springs). You’d also need an adjustable frame if you’re looking to use an adjustable bed and get rid of the wedge, which is something to keep in mind.
The split king that comes to mind is the GhostBed split king since it is effectively two twins but they are primarily the foam you’re looking to avoid. :S
You could instead shop for two twins instead of a single split king so you can prop your mattress with a high density wedge underneath.
If you buy the right firmness for your preferences, then absolutely! Also, latex doesn’t collapse like memory foam or polyfoam, so you’ll avoid that stuck in the mud, sinking feeling some mattress give.
Id suggest looking through our Trusted Members as a starting point. I’m happy to evaluate mattresses you’re interested in for durability as well.
