Help deciding on firmness for mattress and topper

I have 2 ideas for a new mattress + topper combo and am wondering if anyone can speak on how each might feel. (I’m interested in doing the combo instead of just buying a mattress because it allows me to swap out parts if needed.) My ideas are (1) Classic Hybrid Mattress by Engineered Sleep in Extra Firm + 2" Pure Green Natural Latex topper by Sleep on Latex in soft, or (2) the same above-mentioned mattress in Cushion Firm + the same above-mentioned topper in medium.

Some background: I’m 165 lbs, 5’7" and a back sleeper with mid-back pain. I live alone in a building with no elevator, so something extremely heavy or that I’d need assistance with beyond initial setup is not the best choice for me. I am looking to replace my Beautyrest Harmony Lux Hybrid in “Empress Firm”, which is less than 3 years old and unusable at this point. It sags horribly in the middle, with a pronounced dip in the spot where my butt goes. It was (of course) very comfortable at first, but it’s not supportive, and I have back and neck pain from the misalignment - even though I have rotated it religiously and try to sleep in different spots. (I have even flipped it to the hard side out of desperation.) It’s sitting on top of a cheap metal slatted base from Ashley Furniture. I currently sleep with a myriad of pillows around me for comfort, but it’s not working.

Here are my thoughts on what to replace everything with:

BASE - I ordered a Terra Mattress Foundation after reading many posts here and on the mattress subreddit. Looks rock solid and I want to do this right!

MATTRESS - In the interest of support and preventing sag, I’m looking at the Classic Hybrid Mattress by Engineered Sleep in Extra Firm. I like that it’s flippable and not too expensive in case I need to replace the support layer in my setup. However, I know this will be too firm to sleep directly on top of, so I’m thinking of combining this with…

TOPPER - I’m looking at the 2" Pure Green Natural Latex topper by Sleep on Latex. I’m thinking soft because it will go on top of the extra firm mattress, but am not sure this is the right choice. I don’t want to feel like I’m sinking.

Alternatively, I could do the mattress in cushion firm + latex topper in medium? As far as the mattress, I’m terrified of the potential for sag if I go with cushion firm.

Does anyone have insight into how these two setups might feel?

Hey Christine01.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

A modular setup can make life so much easier down the road since you can swap components instead of replacing the whole mattress if something isn’t quite right. And now that you’ve upgraded your foundation to the Terra, you’ve already solved one of the biggest sag-related issues people run into. That thing is rock solid.

A few thoughts on your two setups:

Extra Firm + Soft Latex Topper
This combo will be the most supportive overall. The Engineered Sleep extra firm is very firm, so the soft 2" latex will do most of the “comforting” while the mattress simply holds you in good alignment. For a back sleeper, this can work beautifully as long as:
• you don’t need a deep, plush contour
• you’re okay with a more buoyant/on-top feel rather than sinking in

A soft latex layer won’t make the mattress feel mushy the way soft memory foam would, so you’re unlikely to feel stuck or bottom out. The risk is more that the soft layer might feel a little too thin if your mid-back is very sensitive to pressure changes.

Cushion Firm + Medium Latex Topper
This would have a more balanced overall feel - a little more give from the mattress itself + a topper that contours without being overly soft. For a back sleeper your size, this could still be plenty supportive. Engineered Sleep’s cushion firm is not a “mushy” comfort level by any stretch, and pairing it with a medium topper keeps things controlled.

Your concern about sag is understandable given your experience with the Beautyrest, but hybrids built with thicker gauge coils and simpler comfort layers (like Engineered Sleep uses) tend to be much more stable over time. The failure point in most major-brand beds is the soft foam above the coils — not the coils themselves.

How they’ll feel compared to each other:
• The extra firm + soft combo = firmer overall, flatter alignment, buoyant comfort on top
• The cushion firm + medium combo = slightly more pressure relief at the surface, still supportive, a touch more forgiving for mid-back sensitivity

If you really want to avoid any hint of sink or long-term body impressions, the extra firm base is the safer bet. If you want a little more ease in your upper back and shoulders without going too soft, the cushion firm/medium pairing is probably the sweet spot.

Either way, you’re in a much better direction than the Harmony Lux you’ve been suffering on.

@NikkiTMU Thank you SO much for this reply! This is exactly the information I needed. I truly appreciate your help!! I am still going back and forth, but this info is so helpful, and it’s given me the peace of mind that no matter what, these are all superior brands with higher quality products (and good return/exchange policies). You’re absolutely right, I think either option will be better than this Beautyrest mess. I’m leaning a bit more toward the cushion firm mattress combo now since my aching back needs some contouring AND you assured me it’s not mushy. Thank you again!
