Help deciding on king sized mattress

We just purchased a Saatva classic luxury firm mattress, and as side sleepers, after 6 months my elbows are in pain for the first time ever. Former mattress was awful and caused major lower back pain. My husband has shoulder pain from previous weightlifting. I know that the Saatva has to go, but I purchased it after doing research because it was so highly recommended. Now I have no idea what to get. Hybrid, memory foam, pocket coils, yadayada… ? I guess im just looking for a recommendation and help understanding all of the various types. I just don’t want this search to go on for years like I’ve read about from other folks. I know that everybody’s different, but maybe recommendations as a starting point please. Thanks so much!

King Koil Talalay Latex Brook (Firm) or Genesis (Soft). KK is similar to Flobed VZone except Flobed is adjustable.

Aireloom (inner spring) Preferred Luxetop M1/M2 in Firm/Soft (4 mattreses). I like M1 Firm myself. Dont get Macys Aireloom because of cheaper quality.

I went to Saatva store in Los Angeles. I wasnt impressed with anything.

But other people were buying them.

Hi Wildflowers.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum

Sorry to hear the mattress is too firm - however, a new mattress may not be entirely necessary! You can soften up a firm mattress with toppers (but you can’t firm up a too soft mattress, if that makes sense).

Have you already tried putting a soft or medium topper on this bed?

This is the issue with recommendations. It’s kind of like buying a pair of shoes. What’s going to work for you is going to depend on you, your weight, your pressure points, your personal preferences, etc. And testing in person is always the best way to know for sure what you like, and what feels right for your bodies.

What may feel comfortable and supportive to me may be far too soft or far too firm for you.

I would recommend starting with a topper, so you don’t have to throw out the whole mattress.

If you’re set on throwing out the whole mattress, I’d recommend testing in person. Because you are side sleepers with pressure points on your joints, a hybrid (either latex or memory foam) is likely going to provide the cradling your bodies need. A hybrid is a slab (or two) of foam atop coils.

I’m not sure how much research you’ve already done, but I’d recommend checking out our Mattress Shopping Guidelines and Different Types and Categories of Mattresses article.

In person testing is a great way to get an idea of what you like and quickly. Then, you can order something similar from another company if you’d prefer.
