HELP! From Europe, lost with US market, what am I not considering yet to make best choice?

Hi there! Really love the forum - a lot is still new to me and not sure I understand all jargon as me and my fam moved from Europe 4 years ago and just now got our first house in SF!
Can I please get some help narrowing down brand/retailer choices for the below parameters:

  • KING SIZE
  • budget 4 - 6 k USD.
  • husband, side sleeper 290 pounds, 6,2’’ - likes feel of mattress on softer side - he gets up a lot during the night so lack of motion transfer would be a bonus.
  • wife - starts night on side, wakes up on back, 185 pounds, 5,10’', lower back and hip pain. I found I really need a lot of pressure relief and the top layer needs to be generous enough to allow to get my long limbs some nice comfort/sinking feeling to fall asleep and stay asleep. Not saying it needs to be soft overall as most resources do say that back pain you cannot go too soft. So thinking that something medium/firm underneath with a really thick/tall top layer would be good for me?
  • did not initially like the feeling of Tempurpedic i.e. memory foam only, felt artificial and plastic and too little support, nor did I love the feeling of Helix Luxury plush - too plastic (but this was 3 minutes laying on it in a store so hard to say I gave it a try).
  • Avocado Green Plush had a very nice feel to it - I might like the latex top?
  • I had a pretty bad experience so far with Aireloom Pacific Orion Luxury Firm which I am trying to return. Much too firm - I was not able to find any comfortable position and my shoulders and hips could not sink into the mattress at all. Gave it a month and gave up. Was also too firm for my husband although he definitely slept better.
  • in the rented appartment we slept on a Dreamcloud - which was super old, gave a great sinking in feeling so definitely on the softer side and was broken in as it has been there for years (even sagging on the sides) but dont have details on the model. It was a really nice and comfortable bed!

I realize I might have to start from zero to look for something that is suitable, get some education on what could be the best option for us and how to test it! And right now - I am not really trusting the retailers here (I actually did another post on them acting like Mafia haha).
So HELP dear forum!

Hi Bridzid,

Oh boy! It seems like you have been put through the ringer. I am so sorry you have to deal with this type of service which gives the good guys a bad name.

Since you mentioned San Francisco, I am going to skip over the mattress lesson regarding the types of fabrics, foams and the rest and have you visit one of our Trusted Members in the area. If you read through this thread, another fellow subscriber met with great success at ESW. They are local in Berkeley, a Trusted Member, so you know they have been scrutinized for transparency and quality of work and customer service.

They offer a variety of mattresses, particularly those with quality talalay latex which will offer you the type of subtle, but not swallowing, light sinking, but plush feel you prefer, with the pressure relief you need and want while supporting your husband’s larger frame.

While Aireloom is regarded as a decent quality mattress, they do tend to run on the firmer side, which is suitable for many, but not all, and my usual objection is their foam encased coil edge support. Not a big fan, this video will speak to that. If you are an edge of the bed sleeper, like me, this could be one of a few reasons why this mattress may not have caused you to give it glowing reviews.

In any case, give the folks European Sleep Works a shout and I am sure they can help you meet three of the more important issues when buying a mattress, Personal Preferences, Pressure Relief and Posture and Alignment. Lets make this the first step to success.

Would you like to give our beds a look? Obasan, most of the Healthy Choice, and Naturally Organic are made in Canada and Vispring is made in Great Britain. We can easily customize to a European size and deliver all over the US. Also, Obasan, Healthy Choice, Vispring, and also Naturepedic can be tweaked after purchase if you are having problems.
I’m also wondering if a topper would help the feel of the Aireloom? I know you would like to return it, but thought I would ask.
Good luck! And call us if we can help.

p.s. edited to add, I just saw your other post and am so sorry to hear of your difficult shopping experience.

Hey Maverick!

Omg thank you so much that was such good piece of advice. Went to European Sleep Works last weekend and felt so good with their product and approach.

Went overboard to the other super plush soft side - so ordered:

  • Nordic II HDM 1.6 N/5/N7
  • separate pillow top
  • their stretch cotton mattress protector

What i love about their approach is that within the first 90 days they have the comfort period - and they can exchange any of the layers without actually needing to return the entire mattress, so - they can exchange the latex top comfort zone and the coils e.g. to make them firmer separately!
And also, any time between now and the 10 year warrantly - they can exchange coils e.g. if they malfuntion or we just want a refresh - for something very reasonable like 260 USD.

AMAZING - well keep fingers crossed for me. Delivery is on the 21 of of Sept 2-24 - and I will have some reviews after !

Bridzid,

That is wonderful. Hopefully, they targeted you perfectly on the first round, so you wont need that comfort exchange, but it is reassuring that it is there if you need it.
Let us know how it all progresses!

I ordered a Nordic II with 1.6/N7. I have had it for a week and it seems a lot more firm than what I experienced at the showroom. What does the 5 represent in your configuration?

Thanks
