Help - Mattress for Child

Hi,

I am seeking expert help on selecting the right mattress for my 5 year old. My goal is to order a queen that will last him until he’s 18, which would be 13 years. I realize durability will depend on how well we take care of it, and I also plan to buy from a trusted company listed on this website. The questions are; which ones may be the best. Here is what I am after:

-Medium to medium firm. I can always add a latex topper or something later to soften up as he grows and weight increases.

-A sleep trial guarantee since I won’t be able to sample before ordering. I need a hassle free policy of refund and disposal or return shipping that doesn’t involve me trying to box a queen mattress myself. Reside in Buffalo.

-Hybrid - either latex or memory foam. I know latex has a unique feeling from when I was sampling mattresses years ago, and memory foam while nice (and what I currently sleep on), it will sleep warmer, and kids already sleep warmer.

Can you help me narrow this down to say 3 or 4 good options? If possible, I would like to stay under $1,000. If I am being unrealistic, please let me know or if I should be looking at a different type of mattress, I am open to dusggestions. My goal again, buy a quality mattress with solid materials and construction to last a while, vs. replacing in 5-8 years and over the long-run spending more. There are just so many options and manufacturers I am hoping the specialists here can point me to a few based on their knowledge and experience.

Are you planning to get him a full size?

There’s this one, it’s a latex hybrid mattress that comes with 2 free pillows in full size:

If you put a thick wool mattress cover or topper on it under the sheets, you’d only need to replace the cover and the wool cover would provide the plush top feel. A thick wool cover is about $150 on Amazon. They also have wool toppers which basically means there’s a lot more wool in it, those are about $300. Latex and wool toppers are expensive but those are the generally recommended options since memory foam just feels weird with that sinking in feeling on the top.

But also I’m sure there are other natural mattress protectors. It’s just wool feels better. Protectors can tend to feel like stiff material. And if you’re getting a natural mattress it makes more sense to me to get a natural cover.

Another that’s my favorite is the nest and wild hybrid though it’s not listed as a trusted member. It’s just the owner is really smart and makes his own foams for it, and the base spring is from Texas pocket springs which is very high quality. He provides a 15 year warranty with the bed.

Brooklyn bedding has a bed called the copper flex pro. It uses standard poly foams mainly though which won’t be as durable as the latex in the luxerion or the pre stressed foams in the nest and wild.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am planning on getting a queen - his room is large enough and I figure he’ll like the added space when he’s a teenager. I’ll definitely look at those options closer.

Hey chiricop!

I also have a 5 year old and have been in a similar search.

No more monkeys jumping on the bed! Ha. My son LOVES to jump on the bed and I’m always like YOU’RE GOING TO RUIN THE COMFORT LAYER. Which, of course, he doesn’t care about and has no idea what I’m saying.

Perfect.

In that case I’d actually recommend (in addition to the above LMF rec)…
The Scot from @Quality_Sleep_Shop
The Kiwi from @My_Green_Mattress (a little higher than your budget, but not by much)
Eco Sleep mattress from @Arizona_Premium

And then not quiteee what you’re looking for, but within budget: Raven flippable from @NestBedding
