Help me decide which Denver Mattress Company mattress is best for me

Hello,

I purchased a Simmons mattress 2.5 years ago from Denver Mattress Company which as since shifted (to an extreme degree) to one side of the mattress, rendering it less comfortable than a sleeping bag on the carpeted floor next to which it sits. Fortunately, Denver Mattress Company is honoring the warranty and giving me a store credit for the original purchase price.

After reading some other posts on this site, I’ve decided to steer clear of the ā€œbig nameā€ mattresses they sell which are within my price range (the store credit I am receiving, give or take). It seems that the quality of materials used in the DMC brand mattresses are of equal or higher quality and cost quite a bit less.

Beyond giving me a good nights sleep and satisfying the basic requirements such as keeping my spine aligned etc, I just want a mattress that is going to last. Mattresses I’ve purchased in the past have been very comfortable and soft in the showroom, but have all developed body impressions or ā€˜hamocking’ to the point that I toss and turn all night and wake up sore.

The two mattresses that I think I have narrowed it down to are the Doctor’s Choice Plush or the Durango Firm, which feels similar to the Doctor’s Choice to me. The Durango is appealing to me because of it’s individually wrapped coils and the characteristics common to that type of construction, but I question it’s durability. I also wonder if the foams used in the tops of these will break down to the point that the mattresses will feel much softer or being to ā€˜hammock’ like my others have in the near future?

I am 6’3" and 190 lbs, and my wife is 5’4" and 140 lbs. One of the biggest problems we’ve had in the past is that as the mattresses have broken down, we cannot lay next to each other on our backs without feeling like we’re going to roll into each other.

Can you advise me in any way towards making a decision between these two? I would also consider the Doctors Choice Firm if it would soften up slightly and be more durable than the plush.

Hi Ben P,

The top layers in both are the same (although it doesn’t give the firmness of the layers which would make a difference in durability) so from this perspective they are a wash unless one uses firmer foams than the other (which is very possible and firmness is also a durability factor). The Durango has pocket coils (which will flex more independently) and the Doctors choice has an innerspring which has helicals which join the coils together and flex as a group so if I had to choose based on durability alone (and assuming the foams are the same firmness which they may not be) I would give a very slight edge to the Doctors Choice because the coils won’t flex as much and this may stress the foam above them a little less.

The Doctors Choice firm only uses 1.5" of non convoluted foam which would be more durable than convoluted foam and there would be less polyfoam to soften so this would likely be more durable than either of the other choices. If you were to put a topper on top of this if it was needed for some additional softness (even an inexpensive topper) it would extend it’s life even more (the topper would absorb much of the stress of sleeping and would wear out faster but the foams underneath would last longer). If you went in this direction you could just replace the topper as needed instead of the whole mattress.

Even 1.8 lb polyfoam will soften and compress over time and it’s not as durable as even higher density foams or latex but the softening and degrading of the foam will be slower than the lower quality foams that are likely in the mattress you have now.

Any of these will also soften slightly in the first 90 days or so during the break in period so I would take this into account in your comfort choice. It’s always better to err slightly on the side of firmness rather than softness. Your own personal testing will tell you which one has better pressure relief and alignment and best matches your other preferences and if one is clearly more suitable for you than the other then this may be worth some tradeoff in durability although you did say they felt similar so this may not be a factor.

Hope this helps
