Help me fix my mattress too firm

So I build a bed , but it’s too firm. Bottom layer lux poly foam 50 ild. Which I know is where I went wrong to start. Too firm, but it will last a long time. Middle layer latex 30ild and top layer latex low 20 ild. Bottom layer is 4 inches. The top two are 3 inches each. Total 10 inches. I can feel my hips not sinking in enough and my wife who is more curvy than I wakes up super sore now. I also wake up sore but not like her. Can I simply add a super soft comfort layer and call it a day or should I add something softer between my base and transition layers to have more give? Just looking for ideas. Thanks for any help.

Hi KevinLewis.

Happy to see you back in the forum

Sorry to hear you’ve got a too-firm mattress causing some pains. The good news is it is totally possible to soften up a too-firm mattress.

Is she a side sleeper? Without an appropriate comfort layer, a side sleeper will end up with pressure points during the course of the night and could have symptoms of numbness, soreness, localized redness, or end up tossing and turning all night as your body tries to relieve the pressure.

You could try putting another soft(er) layer atop your 20 ILD, but I think you’d probably find more success with a less firm transition layer - something that provides a little more “give” as you sink into it once you sink through your comfort layer. 30 ILD is still very much on the border of “firm”

So, perhaps something closer to 26 ILD?

Hopefully other DIYers will chime in here as well with their experience.

Thank you for replying. Yes we are both side sleepers. I think I will get something soft for the top first and go from there. Worst case I can always change which layer it is to adjust. I thought I had designed the perfect bed from all my research. Lol. Nope. Our old bed was so bad that this felt like a huge upgrade at first. We didn’t start waking up this sore until a couple months after I built it.

That’s not as uncommon as you’d think!

The beauty of a DIY is that it’s an ongoing learning process  and at least you can swap layers where you need to!

Please keep us informed of your updates.
