Help me, I’ve gone down a rabbit hole and can’t get out

Hi! I am going down the rabbit hole of online mattress shopping.

We currently have a 9 year old ghost bed.

Sleeper 1- stomach sleeper, female, ~190lbs

Sleeper 2- stomach (predominately)/ side sleeper, female, ~170 lbs

We’d like a mattress that will last and is compatible with an adjustable base. Any suggestions?

I am leaning toward @EngineeredSleep or @DLX but there’s a big part of me that’s about to throw in the towel and just buy something ‘easy’.

Getting to the store to try a mattress is nearly impossible (4 kids under 5). Please please help.

Lie down on some mattresses, get a feel. Mattress shopping is way harder than it should be (thank the industry for that). It’s also more nuanced/subjective because of different body types, budgets, etc. but the truths stay true.

I think if you want quality go latex hybrid. It’s the cheap foam that usually wears out in a mattress and makes it uncomfortable. “Easy” is relative. I spent a lot of time researching mattresses/components but not nearly as much time as I suffered through bad sleep/pain.

Given both of you are around the same weight + sleep style get something fairly firm (6.5/10). Easier to soften one up than make a soft one more firm. Avoid regular foam as much as you can and if you want it to last avoid micro-coils too. Most mattresses these days are compatible with an adjustable base.

With a budget and mattress size you could get better recommendations.

Hi nwatts89,

Your insights on @EngineeredSleep and @DLX are absolutely accurate. Both are exceptional companies, creating high-quality mattresses that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern design and technology—similar to the durability of mattresses made to last 15-20 years. Notably, both companies offer flippable mattresses, staying ahead of the curve as the trend seems to be shifting back toward dual-sided designs.

In your weight and sleep position, there should be a variety of choices. As a stomach sleeper, you want to be sure you have a very robust support layer and a comfort layer leaning toward the firmer side to maintain posture and alignment

The wonderful thing regarding the Trusted Members here at TMU, they are always here to guide you with regard to their specific line of mattress systems.

Totally get it—mattress shopping can feel like falling into a never-ending rabbit hole, especially with four little ones keeping you busy! First off, kudos for doing your research and considering quality options like @EngineeredSleep and @DLX. Both brands focus on quality and longevity, so you’re already on the right track. Let me break things down for you a bit to (hopefully!) make the process easier.

For most people with your height, weight, and sleep position, our mattresses are comfortable. Since both of you are predominantly stomach sleepers, resilience and proper support are key. For that, I’d recommend looking into something like the DLX LatexLux. It’s made with natural latex, which is more buoyant and supportive—qualities stomach sleepers often appreciate because it helps keep them properly supported. Plus, latex is durable, so it’s a solid choice for longevity.

Now, if you’re coming from a GhostBed (which is probably all-foam), it’s worth noting that there will be an adjustment period if you switch to a hybrid mattress. The feel is different as the comfort and support will feel different from what you’re accustomed to.

Oh, and yes—DLX mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases, so no worries there.

Pro tip: Go for a company that’s open and honest about whether their mattress might not work for you. Reach out to their customer support to see how they guide you and do they ask for specific details like height, weight, sleep position, current mattress, etc. That kind of help is gold in this process.

I hope this helps simplify things for you! Let me know if you have more questions—happy to help wherever I can. Good luck! :crossed_fingers:
