Anyone have input on what might happen moving to a 1" transition layer over coils?
Current setup:
A: salvaged coils from my old Beautyrest Plush, 2" medium Dunlap latex (28-33 ILD, from APM), 2" 5lbs memory foam (from foam factory).
Other iterations:
B:coils, 2" medium Dunlap latex, 2" super soft Talalay latex from APM (14ild?).
C:coils, 2" medium Dunlap latex, 3" Tempurpedic topper
Impressions:
A: I would like to be just a bit more supportive but is comfortable.
B: also comfortable but also feels a bit unsupportive
C: most comfortable but would like more support and it is taller than my old mattress which is not preferred.
The reason I think I need more support is that I’ve had low back pain with all of them and that is not something I typically have a problem with.
I’m thinking about switching to a 1" latex transition layer from SOL either medium (34ild) or firm (46ild… which seems very firm) to use under the 3" Tempurpedic. The idea being it would let the springs offer more support but still cushion me from feeling them. I prefer the feel of Talalay but haven’t seen any for sale in 1" and it’s only a transition layer.
If moving to a 1" transition layer is a bad idea, please let me know! I’m certainly open to other suggestions. A different 2" layer or layering 1" medium+firm layers come to mind. I’d prefer my bed is 4" over the coils but don’t require it.
I am 6’4" 185lbs and side sleep. Second sleeper is 5’2" 120lbs primarily back sleeper that has found all versions acceptable.
It sounds like you are quite crafty when it comes to your mattress! From what I have learned, a 1" transitional layer is often made from medium-high density polyfoam or latex and is designed to deepen the contour while limiting excess sinkage.
What you are suggesting does make sense, but keep in mind that the coils could be the culprit here, if it continues to feel unsupportive. Given that you are a side sleeper, you will likely need at least 2 - 3" of softness on top, while the back sleeper who is also lighter in weight, would not. You could try this transitional layer on top of the coils in medium, but firm may be too obvious on your shoulder.
Hoping that you receive some other feedback and can find the solution you are looking for!
