Help with analyzing spinal alignment

I took the plunge on a luxe adapt soft. I’m 6’1" 203-208ish. I have broad shoulders and a less broad hip/waist area which seems to make it annoying trying to find a good mattress. I had tried a purple 3 with no luck, I was waking up with a pretty severe upper back pain around the area behind the lower ribs. And just generally couldn’t stay asleep beyond 4-5am when my body was filled with aches. This continued after even a month so I returned it. I bought a tempurpedic luxe adapt soft (a serious plunge that I may not have really had to take had I discovered this forum sooner… lol). Either way I want to make the best of it… I am a side sleeper and I’ve had some bad shoulder problems as of late. (Prior to venturing to find a new bed). My first night on the luxe soft I had a bit of a hard time sleeping as I was perceiving a tugging or sagging feeling right at my low back. I couldn’t tell if it was legit or just me overthinking things since I was worried about choosing a soft mattress in general, having never tried one. The nights that followed I slept pretty good and I haven’t woken up with any pain. It’s been relieving on my shoulder also. My question is whether my spine is not properly aligned and whether this sensation I feel is just the natural influence of gravity at the mid section or whether I could use a more firm mattress… the main two other choices are the luxe adapt firm and pro adapt medium. I bought it at mattress firm and my trade must be of equal or higher value since they worked a second exchange for me. If I bump to the pro adapt I will have to find something to add along to make up the difference basically… which sucks. Either way I’ve laid on both of those and at first I felt like maybe I was more horizontal and supported better but after a time I felt that same sort of tug sensation. I was wondering if an expert could help me and assess a couple photos??? Didn’t know whether to post it here or if there’s a message feature i am better to use. I have tried taking multiple photos/vid and with a few different pillow styles/lofts… I swear I do not seem to get a consistent result. Sometimes it looks straight as an arrow and other times I worry maybe my mid section is sagging??? It’s even less obvious since I haven’t gotten any back pain. I will post a couple pics here from different days to show the inconsistency of the results. Some are with different varying pillows.*** The main thing I am looking to know is whether I need to look at one of the other mattresses; I still have 60 days left. I will say… in general I want to stay with memory foam (tempur is really my only practical choice due to the exchange policy), but I have noticed far less tossing and turning and more consistent sleep with switching to memory foam. Also could any issues I feel be postural?? I have noticed I alleviated any issue with the pain at my ribs/lat by laying a pillow behind me from hip to shoulder. Perhaps that was created by twisting/torquing and not lateral misalignment.

We’ve all been there with the big box store buys and how they trap you into only spending more (since you are stuck cycling through mattresses to hopefully find something that works because you don’t want to lose the money you already spent, it’s a very dirty business model IMHO). If you are trying to make sure your mattress works best for you sometimes you need to detach from the idea that you have to get something for your money from them or you may continue to throw good money after bad (I made the same mistake and that set me on the DIY path). Tempurpedics are obviously known for memory foam and it’s great for pressure relief (as you found) but it doesn’t do as well in the support and you can see that in your photos. Now going up to firm may help on the posture but again it’s probably going to be less than idea for relieving your shoulder issues.

Here’s what’s inside the Luxeadapt Soft

You can see there’s lots of pressure relief but very little in terms of support layers. So this becomes an issue at your BMI as you can see in the photos you posted.

Best configuration

Looking at the photos I see a few things. First you seem to be sinking into the mattress quite a bit in all the photos (ideally far more than I would want to see). Many of the other photos you can see that your hips sink in alot (no you’re not crazy, this is the sagging sensation you describe) which creates a really steep angle between your spin and the bed (ideally your spine and the bed surface should be parallel). It sounds like you did some crude zoning with pillows which is what I would suggest is likely what you’d have to do to make this work. You may be able to trade this for a stiffer version (so your hips sink less) but then you may run into other issues doing that (ie shoulders don’t sink in as much leading to pain there). Bottom line is I’m not sure how much more you can go with this setup without getting into customization that ruins the warranty. So if you don’t have any pain and it sleeps fine for you then I would just go with it but if it starts to become an issue then this particular setup is quite limited as to what options you have to fix it later.

I appreciate the response. For the most part I don’t think I’m in a place where I went to test into this one per say… I did try a couple of other models today as extensively as I could given the time I had. I was able to lay on two or three for about 20 minutes each. The pro adapt medium felt more horizontal and my shoulders still seemed to tolerate it well. The luxe adapt firm… ironically called firm; seemed like a step more contouring from the pro adapt medium…

Now that you’ve mentioned the support, I’m wondering if the pro adapt medium hybrid may be a smarter one to look at? Or probreeze medium hybrid??

I laid on the hybrids but didn’t think move of it at first bc I guess I had mentally committed to just going with the traditional. All in all the pro adapt medium felt like a decent contingency plan… my shoulders tolerated the luxe firm and pro medium well.

Sorry, I’m not sure how to edit that post. I meant I don’t think I want to tear into it; maybe down the road if all else fails, i’ll do some custom work.

I felt like the pro-adapt medium, and luxe firm were pretty good. The luxe firm is almost more contouring despite being firm.

After hearing your reply I wonder if I really need to look at the pro-adapt medium hybrid since it has coils etc.

No way to edit posts unfortunately, you have to use the preview/write tabs to see what it looks like before posting.

My first instinct would be to limit the amount of money (beyond what has already been spent) since there is a strong probability you may need to do some additional work later to get yourself a good long-term solution (Tempurpedic has been cheapening their support foams over time to maximize profits just like all the big name mattress makers). That said if you can exchange for something (using little or no extra money) with stiffer springs and a zippable cover (not sure if all Tempurpedics are zippable) that would give you a decent starting point if you decided it didn’t work to start down the DIY road. It’s possible that none of it works later but it’s all about giving you the best probability of having something work for you given the money is already spent. Again it’s your choice and only you know your own personal preferences and situation best but hopefully it gives you some things to consider anyway.

Well I do have a few options that involve no money.
-Probreeze medium and medium hybrid. (Both of these seem med-firm honesty)

-proadapt medium and medium hybrid. ( hybrid feels a bit too soft here…This option kind of sucks because it’s a down grade, but due to policy; I have to find other stuff to spend the other $700 on…)

-luxe adapt firm

Based on your experience would it be a safer bet to choose one of the hybrids??? I like the foam cores feel more bc I don’t like the bounce/movement, but if the hybrid pocketed coil core is the better choice overall, I’m open-minded. I’m not sure if the poly foam support cores on these are all the same across all firmnesses or what.

Basically I’m Wondering the long term durability of the support cores in the mediums vs the medium Hybrids. They do all have great zippable covers for sure.

Hey k_sr20,

Welcome to the Mattress Underground  !

I see that you and DIYer @Mattrebuild are enjoying a dynamic conversation regarding possible exchange of your Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt Soft mattress. Any further updates on your mattress testing?

Thanks,
Sensei
