Thanks Catia. So you found that when you stacked two SOL 3" firms on top of each other it felt softer to you than when you had one SOL 3" firm under a SOL 3" medium? Both set-ups you tried were 6" thick? Or was your second set-up 9" thick (i.e. SOL 3" firm - SOL 3" firm - SOL 3" medium)? Thanks!
Might just ne diffèrent point of pression on the firm medium.
Aldo, I gave Seen this quitte often… The Side with the “finish” aspect might seems harder when you press on it with your hands while lying on the bed. (Is it only more elastic since the very top of That surface is a Little moré dence.
But the other Side (wich is the cut Side) is actually firmer. This also dépends if the pin holes gap is profond or not… If not it Will be harder on That part of the foam.
All of theses nuances make the foam a Little unpredictable.sometime…and it also means That when you Found the sweet spot… Flipping the latex could change the feel and support drastically.
I had the “chance” to get ALL theses variations into ONE single 1 inch medium from sol Wich Makes IT totally unusable.
Edit: I am fighting with m’y New phone keyboard autocorrect. Sorry for the grammar
2 of the 3" SOL firms (for 6") did feel softer than the 3" firm + 3" medium. It was still very firm. I have no explanation for how exactly that happens. Not a fan of their medium, or at least the one I received-it felt like nothing at all way too soft, did not feel any support at all, the medium folded in 1/2 for 6" was way too soft, just sunk in & bottomed out. I’m about 125lbs.
Also I tried the medium on top of the 2 firms, it took up space, but didn’t do much else.
As a side note, when I looked stuff up online, people seem to feel the medium is too firm. Maybe they sent me a soft by mistake, I honestly don’t know.
Hi. I’m no expert but I have a couple of thoughts regarding your lower back pain.
First, have you had a doctor’s exam recently? Lower back pain can be caused by an undiagnosed urinary tract infection among other illnesses.
Second, from my own experience, a too firm mattress can cause lower back pain also. I assumed that my very firm mattress was breaking down after one year when I began having back, hip, and knee pain. I tore into the mattress and found that it was still in excellent condition. But I decided to use the coils and replace the softer memory foam with a very firm latex. Mistake. I hurt all over.
After a couple of too firm builds, including an all latex, and after a lot of reading, I realized that my problem was the opposite of what I thought. I went softer and I’m able to sleep now and I wake up feeling much better.
Yes their medium is weird, it does not feels like latex .I am only comfortable to buy their firms toppers now. I wonder how are their soft ones
Hi everyone! Been a minute! Wanted to give an update and see if anyone has any new recommendations…
I’m still sleeping on the floor. At the moment I have a 3" medium sleep on latex dunlop as my bottom layer. And I have a 3" firm sleep on latex dunlop on top. On top of that I have 2 old polyester fill comforters that I’m using as “toppers”.
I’ve found that putting the firm dunlop layer on top of the medium dunlop layer has helped a lot for me. It seems to have alleviated back pain. And to me it feels the most similar to a spring mattress, which is what I was used to.
The only problem now is that I fall asleep on my side and wake up with shoulder pain because although the firm top layer seems to help my back, it is not very forgiving on my shoulder…
What would you suggest I try to alleviate the shoulder pain, without creating a surface so soft that it re-introduces back pain? A softer latex? Memory foam? Wool? And how many inches?
Many thanks!
Have you considered a vzone or DYI a zoned top layer? i dont see how else you can customize the shoulder area to be soft and the hips/glutes area to be firm.
Both @EngineeredSleep and @CST can make for that accommodation. My guess is @ShovlinMattress and as well.
This is all very helpful information for me too, thank you Hester! I visited the Futon Shop a couple days ago in person and liked a lot of their products… but ouch the reviews they have on yelp regarding mold are too frequent to look past and like you said the return policy is the worst!
Just the worst. Stay away
Hi! Unfortunately latex didn’t work for my body. I just found it too resistant. Hard to explain but it was always pushing back on me just enough to throw things out of alignment. I wanted to love it but I went back to an innerspring mattress after losing sleep for a few months and going a bit crazy and my body is so much happier.
But at the end of the day we are all so unique and that’s why this is so hard. We have to find out what our bodies want and that will be completely different from someone else.
I am not a fan of the medium SOL 3” either and I can’t figure out why! But I sleep way worse on it when I have it on top of the 3” firm. Maybe I need to exchange it for another firm.. What is your current set up now and are you still using SOL?
I just received one of their 2” soft toppers! Not sure if I will be able to incorporate it into my build, but I sure am trying ![]()
MN- I am so curious what you ended up doing! I am currently sleeping on SOL 3” firm and 3” medium but I think I need to exchange the medium! My body really doesn’t like it for some reason. I am 105 pounds but have a herniated disc in my low back, and was recommended to try 3” soft directly on top of either 3” or 6” of firm. I have a 3” avocado topper that is 14-19 ILD so it’s pretty soft, and I put it on top of the SOL 3” firm… surprisingly that was my best sleep yet. Let’s see how it goes tonight. I have been losing sleep over this for sure lol Has not been fun! Or comfortable. But like you, I was thinking only 6” for a mattress might be too low. Playing around with toppers is tricky, especially if the return policy is not good! I literally have 6 in my house right now, you would think my apartment is a topper factory haha. Lord help me. Really curious to hear where you are at with it now!
I was very disappointed with the 3” SOL “medium” that I completely eliminated it, meaning I returned for a refund. The issue was despite it having the weight of a medium density latex topper, it behaved like a 10 ILD poly foam, the support was non existent across the entire topper, it would compress and didn’t behave like latex should. I then purchased a 1 inch medium density from Foam By Mail, and honestly, the Foam By Mail 1” latex topper gives more support that the 3” SOL topper that I returned. My set up currently is completely different, resorted back to a waterbed, the 1” Foam By Mail king latex topper in medium density, is now over top of my Sterling waveless waterbed. Heat problem solved. My 2 queen SOL 3” firm slabs are in storage. The SOL firm is excellent, the medium is awful in my opinion.
Catia, thank you so much for sharing! I had the same exact experience with the SOL medium topper. I am in the process of returning it now. I LOVE the firm topper, but the medium topper did not work for me at all no matter what I tried. Glad to hear it wasn’t just me!
