How much memory foam might be too much?

About to get a latex mattress in the mail, i’d describe it as a slightly firm medium, and will add my 3" mem foam topper on top, i’m tempted already to layer even 1 more layer of mem foam on it, does that sound overkill? The latex matty is 36 or 44ILD 6" dunlop layer, then a “softer”, (maybe 24ILD convoluted dunlop) layer.

Don’t want to injure myself by having no support but also want to finally have a soft mattress.

How much memory foam btwn 4-5lb is too much? Any ideas on this? 4" is prolly fine, 5?

Hi paisley,

I would recommend that you give the new mattress a try with your current memory foam topper, allowing the product to break in a bit and “get your bearings” for a while before making any decisions on adding another topper.

Generally, I advise about 4" or so of memory foam together as approaching a maximum thickness, as that allows for quite a bit of conformation and is usually around the maximum that most people would need between the differences in dimensions (shoulders to torso to waist to hips). I do know that you have been searching for quite some time for a very plush feel, and certainly have tried quite a few different configurations, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you ended up adding an additional 1" – 2" layer of memory foam or even ultra plush latex in addition to your set up. However, that’s not advice of what to do – I’m just stating that with all of your trials and tribulations and chasing of a specific feel, I certainly could see you ending up with something like that. I do know that you are aware of the potential negative alignment issues with having “too much” ultra plush comfort layers on top of a mattress, so just be careful when chasing that elusive ultra plush comfort.
