I have ended up with an all latex mattress. Reason being I ran out of my trial time before I could try other mattresses. I didn’t know what to try and I thought the adjustability of the layers might be the best I could do. But now I am developing pain and soreness and can not seem to find a solution.
The layers arranged as best I can do are from bottom up - Firm/MediumDunlop/MediumTalalay/MediumDunlop. I have to have a soft/giving feel next to me. But I need a solid support under it. And it seems as time has passed I am getting soreness from not enough support to keep it from dipping too much under my hips section.
When I tried sleeping with the top 2 layers being the Medium Dunlop, it is too firm. I intended to sleep on that arrangement a few nights to get used to it, but after one night I got so stiff and sore as the day went on that I didn’t want to suffer again that night, and changed it back.
I even tried it with the original cotton quilted mattress cover instead of a more silky/giving cover I use. And even that made it too firm to be comfortable because that original cotton quilted mattress cover is a little more thick and stiff.
I have tried 4 different foam toppers in different configurations between the latex layers. Two of them are the kind that retains the hand print, and just added no support - so too soft. One was so firm it was almost like styrofoam - no give at all. Even 2 and 3 layers down it was too firm.
One of them was a loan of a 2.5" Isolus by Malouf. From the one night it was available to me, it seemed to be the help I need by providing a more solid feeling support when placed 2 layers down from the top. But I have not found it available in the twin xl size I need. And I’m not sure it would be just the same as the one I tried.
I tried to find out from the foam by mail website about the firmness of the toppers they offered. But when I emailed asking questions about the firmness/support and about return policy, the response was not favorable answers about the support, and especially when I asked about returns.
How can I determine or search out a type of foam that would give some underlying support? What are the terms/numbers/??? that would help me locate what I am looking for?
I had a similiar problem with a latex mattress but missed the return window. Ended up freecycling it. Then I ended up with a Silver Cloud Inn Therapedic spring mattress. New (compared to the 5 year old one I slept on at the hotel) it was a bit firm without a topper. I have tried the Malouf memory foam topper as well as a soft SOL latex topper on it. The Malouf topper slept hot and didn’t provide enough support. The SOL latex improved the comfort but I still had mid back pain which I thought was from dog grooming. Well I researeched memory foam more and it seems 4lbs is a good weight. I read some people thought foam by mail was too soft but came across one post recommending Foam n More and their 4lb topper. Well I have been sleeping about a week on Foam n Mores 2” topper. Its supportive, yet conforming, hardly any smell, and my back pain is gone. I do find myself missing more of a hugging feeling so now I want to try the Foam n More in 3” but that is just fine tuning. The 2” is the best Ive experienced so far for my sleep. I did have a hickup with shipping but once I contacted someone about it they sorted it out.
“Foam n Mores 2” topper. Its supportive, yet conforming”
Thanks. I will check on that.
Can you describe the softness/sinking in or not you found in the Malouf. I would like to know how they are compared to the loan I had.
I’m 5’6" and about 215lbs. I’m female and I’m old.
The latex layers are each 3" thick.
At my weight Firm/Medium/Medium was advised. I had such a horror on a firm mattress, I felt I wanted soft. The talalay medium being softer was a compromise. Then I added another medium dunlop. Sure enough I need more support - that is why the dunlop is on top. And now it seems as soft as the talalay. My hip section is in a real dip, and my whole body is sore more and more each day from the lack of support. As I said, sleeping on the 2 dunlop layers on top provides the support, but too firm to be comfortable. I just don’t know what else to try.
