How useful are Consumer Reports mattress ratings? For example, the Avocado Green is their top rated mattress, with other mattresses from manufacturers endorsed by TMU here such as My Green Mattress receiving significantly lower ratings.
I know in the end a lot will be highly subjective, dependent on personal preferences and needs, body type, etc. But is it a good starting point, or not really?

As far as reviews go, Consumer Report is probably the most unbiased and trusted reviews for most people, butagain I caution: any review is, as you say, highly subjective. While consumer Reports can provide information on particular issues, at the end of the day, your own personal experience counts for far more than a supposedly objective review
I would definitely take any review with a grain of salt!
You can also search TMU Mattress forum by putting in the search bar Avocado, or “Avocado Green” to see what other consumers that bought the mattress had to say. Here is a page with the “Avocado Green” search applied. From what I see the opinions are split (as is to be expected due to people with different needs and preferences). Some people find it quite firm which indicates that it does not accommodate a larger range of needs and preferences.
