I’ve noticed that some hybrid manufacturers use a base layer (latex or other foam) then coils, then latex as a comfort layer, while some only use coils + latex and skip the bottom layer of foam. I’ve been contemplating DIYing my new mattress instead of buying a ready-assembled hybrid. Is it necessary to use a base layer under the coils? And if not necessary, what is the benefit of doing so?
Hi CCTexas.
The bottom layer is an optional layer some manufacturers use to help stabilize their coils, but this isn’t always necessary.
To quote Sensei…
The addition of a base layer foam will add stability to the pocketed coil foundation.
