Hybrid mattress in a box recommendations + shipping

Hi all,

My wife and I are looking for a quality latex/pocket coil hybrid. She’s a stomach/side sleeper, I mostly sleep on my back or side.

We live in Maine, three hours up the coast from Portland. We tried Portland Mattress Makers but delivery was $450. We contacted Gardner Mattress and the quote was $650. So now we’re exploring online “mattress in a box” options. We initially avoided these options, it seemed better to see and try the mattress before making a decision, but the delivery quotes have made us rethink that plan.

Does anyone have any favorable, or otherwise, experiences to share about buying a quality hybrid mattress online? Specifically, did completing the site’s sleep questionnaire result in the expected firmness, and did the quality of the mattress and the overall experience of shipping a hybrid meet your expectations?

Thanks!
Steve

Hi Steve,

I can only tell you my experience with an online mattress purchase. My fiancé and I went with an @DLX premier hybrid. They do offer an option for latex as the comfort layer. We have had the mattress for just about two months, and could not recommend them more highly. They are very helpful when assessing your needs, and would definitely recommend speaking with them for your needs. The quality of their mattress absolutely amazed me and we will be buying from them again in the future. Hope this helps a little and I am sure others will chime in with other recommendations, but I would highly encourage you to at least consider Dlx.

Hi @sbeaupre !

I wanted to chime in here and give some thoughts. Your post is directed towards consumers, but I wanted to help where I could.

Most companies (not all) use pocketed coil systems these days, which have the ability to be rolled and compressed with no damage done to the mattress at all (we actually receive the coils rolled up from the coil manufacturer). Also, most companies have very good trial periods and are easy to work with on returns - because we realize that not being able to lay on the mattress makes it difficult to choose the right one!

I can speak to our Sleep Quiz in that it does a good job of providing general recommendations and is right most of the time (we have a simple product line so that helps), but we always prefer when people chat or call in!

So, find a company that has a good trial period, no return fees, and if possible some type of exchange option. It also helps if that company makes their own products.

Our most popular mattress is a hybrid latex/pocketed coil (DUO Latex Mattress) and happy to help in anyway I can ([email protected])

We do ship to Maine for free and we offer in-home setup options if you need those as well.

Good luck on your search!

Thanks for the shout-out, @rrindone ! We’re delighted to hear you’ve had a great experience with our DLX Premier Hybrid.

Hey @sbeaupre, I totally understand the struggle with high delivery costs and the desire to try a mattress before purchasing. It’s a common dilemma, especially in more remote areas. At DLX, we also hold Portland Mattress Makers and Gardner Mattress in high regard—they’re great options for those who prefer to try before they buy.

Our LatexLux mattress might be a good fit for what you’re looking for—it features a zipper that allows you to access and adjust the three-inch latex insert for customized comfort. This could be particularly beneficial since your sleeping preferences vary between you and your wife.

If you found a mattress you liked at Portland Mattress Makers or Gardner Mattress but were put off by the delivery costs, feel free to share the model name and firmness with us. We can help you find a similar feel and comfort level in our lineup.

Thanks everyone and thanks for the offer, @DLX

The closest we came at Portland was the Boothbay Natural Latex hybrid: “1016 Combi Quantum Edge Pocket Coil” (characterized as a “firm”) topped with 2" of 100% Talalay (ILD of 20). They were hesitant to characterize the overall firmness, saying it would feel different for everyone based on their weight. I suppose that’s always going to be true, but still it felt like it might be a medium, perhaps a bit softer. If it helps, my wife weighs about 120, I’m 190. I think we might looking for something that works for both of us, so maybe a medium-firm or firm (7-8?),

Hi sbeaupre,

You can try mattresses in our showroom (which is probably four hours from you) and have them shipped for much less than $450 if you set them up yourself (white glove is more) and depending on the model.

Naturepedic has high-quality latex/pocketed coil hybrids. They make them to order and ship them right to your door. Because they can go through common carrier, delivery is far less than $450. The setup is simple, but it would take two people. You can swap out layers after purchase, if needed, to tweak the mattress (a nice option when you are buying online).

If you call on the phone, we are happy to work with you on what firmness combination might work for you. Or if you get on our chat we can help if that is easier.

If you ever get down to the Kittery/Portsmouth area, we have the EOS and the EOS pillowtop in our showroom. You can try them and swap out layers so that you can try various combinations (Naturepedic has 5). We can order your mattress for you and have it delivered to your door.
We have a sale going on through Labor Day.
Let us know if we can help!

@sbeaupre We’d agree with Portland on the overall firmness; it can be quite subjective. What feels medium to one person might feel firm to another, and someone else might find it soft.

While we don’t provide an exact match to the Boothbay, if you found it comfortable in the showroom, there’s a good chance we can get you comfortable on one of our mattresses. Based on the build and the feel you’re describing, our LatexLux in Medium could offer a similar balance of comfort and support. It’s designed to accommodate different weights, so it could work well for both you and your wife. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or need further assistance!
