Hybrid mattress with removable cover

Hi there,

I’m looking for a mattress which is cooling, therefore must have springs. I’m assuming there’s no such thing as spring-only mattress, therefore must have some foam on top, therefore must be hybrid.

I also want it to be medium firm for both side and stomach sleeping and doesn’t sag over time.

Finally, since mattresses gather dust mites, dead flakes of human skin, and other nasty things, I want to be able to unzip it, take the cover off and vacuum inside from time to time (what’s the point of paying $5,000 on a super luxury, organic, GMO-free, cruelty-free, etc. mattress if in a few years it becomes a petri dish, no?). Is that even possible with a spring mattress? Won’t the springs fall over the floor if I remove the cover? I don’t think a mattress pad or protector will be sufficient to block all these micro-particles from getting in. And even if it does block them, I doubt I will still have a cooling mattress at that point.

I live in Toronto. Any suggestions for such mattress that can be shipped here is greatly appreciated.

Hey persavon,

Welcome to the Mattress Underground  ! Thanks for your question.

Happy to hear you’re using the TMU for researching your new mattress purchase! As I generally advise those beginning their shopping journey, you’ll want to check out these Phoenix articles explaining how differences in materials, layering and personal preferences affect the type mattress best to focus your efforts on: “Different types of Categories of Mattresses” (helpful for understanding the different type hybrid mattress constructions you refer to above), “Mattress Support Cores”, “Mattress Comfort Layers” (review the discussion on latex, it is known for its cooling properties), and finally, “Five Steps to your Perfect Mattress”.

Also worth reviewing is Phoenix’s “Mattress Specifications You Need to Know”, useful guidance for discussion of your comfort/ support preferences when working with a manufacturer.

There is! You are describing a pocketed coil support system, common in the construction of a hybrid mattress. Often, these come with zippered covers that could be removed, the coils are tied together and covered individually in a muslin fabric, so no worries on their “falling over the floor” if the cover is removed for internal vacuuming. Definitely consider a mattress protector, however, as zippered covers for either the bottom support layer or upper comfort layer should be spot cleaned only, be sure and get the manufacturer’s guidance on that for proper maintenance of your mattress and protection of its warranty.

Your question reminds me of this previous post by Phoenix addressing natural shopping options in Canada, “Canada Vancouver, Latex mattress options under $2000”, containing this TMU trusted member listing you may find useful for your research, several offering zippered support layers:

CBH Wood Furniture Canadian Manufacturer with an European tri slat system bed deign with natural latex mattresses which is great for proper alignment

Memory Foam ComfortCanadian online retailer with a very good selection of latex mattresses and hybrids that would fit your budget range. They used to have their HC in Delta BC but I am not sure if this is still the case.

FloBeds Is a US-based manufacturer that ships worldwide and has options that would fit your budget range

My Green MattressUS based manufacturer that ships to Canada.

Nest BeddingUS based manufacturer that ships to Canada(free shipping).

Just curious: are the stores in your area open for limited numbers of shoppers and if so, is there a mattress manufacturer/ retailer you could schedule a visit with? If conditions aren’t safe regarding COVID19, please, definitely don’t put yourself in harm’s way. Phone calls work well too…looking forward to hearing more on what your next steps are and good luck  .

Thanks,
Sensei

Hey Sensei,

Thanks for your reply.

I’ve narrowed down my requirements to the following:

  • Talalay (Radium) latex topper
  • Pocketed coil support system
  • Removable cover (with zipper) made of cotton or bamboo quilted with wool

Situation in Canada, and especially Ontario is really sad with the market flooded by foam mattresses (and by that I mean memory foam and polyfoam) and virtually zero options for anything else.

I’m familiar with most of the retailers in the list you provided, but here’s a quick summary.

Foam only.

Foam only and require to buy the bed as well.

Foam only.

Sketchy website, very little info available. I contacted them for more details, but no answer.

I found them about a week ago and they seem to tick all the boxes. They are fantastic! However I asked Ken and he said that they don’t ship to Canada. Bummer… I’m seriously considering shipping to a mail center and drive over the border and pick it up myself. However after currency exchange, duty fees, travel gas, etc. it might end up double the price and not worth it.

Foam only.

They don’t ship to Canada, I asked them.

Non-removable cover. Also very expensive, double the prices from Arizona Premium Mattress.

Non-removable cover. Also no Talalay latex.

No Talalay, only Dunlop. Also very expensive, double the prices from Arizona Premium Mattress.

They don’t ship to Canada, I asked them.

Foam only.

Hey persavon,

While searching, try using both terms “Vita Talalay latex” and “Radium”. Radium, a European company, is one of the oldest producers of latex in the world and manufactures Vita Talalay latex, the name you’ll find listed in the mattresses components. I found this link featuring several partner options in Canada, they could help you with finding a manufacturer in your area for suggestions on this type construction.

Glad you took a look through the list, I know there were quite a few manufacturers’ sites to review and it sounds like some have changed their shipping policies since this information was gathered, I did pull it from a previous post to answer you more quickly. Just a small clarification regarding the use of “Foam Only” in your summary to avoid confusion for others following your posts. All of the listed manufacturers offer some variety of latex, natural latex, dunlop latex, talalay latex, or Vita talalay latex, as well as certified organic and other natural materials in their components. Latex is a “foam” product, the names “dunlop”, “talalay” or “vita talalay” refer to a manufacturing process. In your comments, “Foam only” refers (I believe) to a mattress lacking a pocketed coil construction. In other words, these manufacturers didn’t offer the type hybrid pocketed coil mattress that you’re interested in…am I following you here?

Thanks  ,
Sensei

Yes, TMASC is indeed another option. One thing I didn’t like is that their top latex is only 2". Also their prices are very high.

Right now I’m waiting for Ken from Arizona Premium Mattresses to finish up a new pricing agreement for shipping to Canada. If that doesn’t go through I’ll probably have to resort to TMASC.

Absolutely correct. I consider “foam” all 3: latex, memory foam and polyfoam. Sorry I wasn’t clear.
