I decided to try a 2" 4lb FXI made in the USA 2012 memory foam topper on top of my 7" firm Dunlop however I can’t tolerate the off gassing. I’m clearing my throat or chest all day and the smell wakes me up several times a night.
It is quite comfortable but the gasssing and heat is just not suitable IMO for bedding, at least not with the three different brands I have tried so far.
Back to trying to find a reasonable price on a Talalay topper that is what they say it is and not a fake.
Hi jege41,
I can certainly sympathize with you. I also had a strong reaction to a memory foam topper (in my case it was Novaform) and both me and my DH experienced some very unpleasant but “typical” symptoms of memory foam reaction. They included a dry mouth, sore and painful throat, burning skin, headache, muscle soreness, strange dreams, and overall soreness and fatigue. It’s the only memory foam reaction I have ever experienced and I’m fine with other memory foams I have used or slept on but I wouldn’t ever want to experience it again.
It’s strange sometimes because some people can be more sensitive than others, there can be differences in the same foam sometimes (probably because of variations in how it was made or cured) and sometimes long periods of storage in plastic can make a difference as well. In most cases a few days or even a few weeks of airing out will resolve it but there are always cases where this doesn’t seem to be enough. There have also been members of the forum with MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) that were even sensitive to polyfoam and had to air it out for a year before they could use it.
I think in our case it was a “defective” layer because both of us reacted to it but with you experiencing this with 3 different types of memory foam it may well be that you are more sensitive to this than most.
It’s not pleasant when it happens no matter what the reason and it’s fortunate that in most cases the symptoms go away very quickly after the “offending” memory foam is removed (in our case it was about 48 hours).
Phoenix
Maybe this is why NASA abandoned the program of making the stuff for space travel as it would contaminate the entire capsule.
Oh well it is not for me anyways that I know for sure now.
Cheers
