I have given up on research!

Huge dilemma trying to find a mattress for my husband and I. We have a king and are going down to a full, as we dont take up alot of room. We do not want a split bed. He prefers more firm and I prefer a little softer. He is 5’11 averages between 180-190lbs, very hot sleeper, severe shoulder pains, is a back sleeper usually but when shoulders ache he is a big side sleeper. I(she) am 5’7 average between 115 and 125lbs, normal temperature sleeper, severe hip and lower back pains, and i roll constantly at night because i cant get comfortable. My matress is making my lower extremeties go numb. I would also not like to go over 1500 bucks. Please help! Im at a loss in research with what I should get us! Please and thank you!

Hi Desireaerlemm,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround.

It seems like you’re looking for a mattress that accommodates both your and your husband’s preferences, without a split bed, while also fitting within your budget and if I understand you correctly, you want to move from a king to a full, which does mean you’ll both be sharing a smaller space, which could make it more challenging to find a mattress that works for both of you without a split configuration.

Given that your husband prefers a firmer mattress while you prefer something a bit softer, one option to consider could be a hybrid mattress with adjustable firmness. Perhaps someone like @EngineeredSleep can create a hybrid mattress that will allow you to adjust firmness levels on each side of the bed, giving both of you a more personalized experience without going for a split mattress. Alternatively, you could look for mattresses that offer zoned support, where the areas under your shoulders and hips provide more cushion, but the areas under your back remain firmer. This would cater to your individual body types and sleeping positions. Additionally, something like @BackScience which offers mattresses that are customizable, with lumbar flex support.

For your husband’s shoulder pain and heat sensitivity, a mattress with good cooling technology and pressure relief in the shoulder area would help. For your hip and lower back pain, look for mattresses with medium to medium-firm support and pressure relief in the lower back region.

You could look for mattresses with return policies or trial periods, so you can test how they work for both of you before fully committing.

Some of the choices may exceed you current budget, but those may offer significant longevity, so if you are able, it may be worth it to explore some that might fall above the budget.

The most important thing is to find a mattress system that will accommodate your size and comfort preferences first and then address the budget second.

Finding the perfect mattress for two people with different needs can be tricky, especially when you’re on a budget. So, I want to chime in here and offer a great solution.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic and mattress designer, I understand the importance of finding a mattress that provides the right balance of comfort and support for both individuals. And in your case, with conflicting firmness preferences and specific pain points, customization is key.

That’s why I recommend the Back Science Essentials mattress. It’s incredibly supportive, especially for your lower back pain, and here’s the best part: we can customize the firmness on each side to perfectly match your individual preferences.

Here’s why I think it’s a great fit for you:

-Customizable Comfort: Your husband can have a firmer feel on his side, while you can enjoy a softer feel on yours. This way, you both get the comfort you need.
-Targeted Support: The Essentials mattress is designed with zoned support to provide extra support to your lower back, which is crucial for side sleeping and pain relief. At the same time, the softer setting on your husband’s side will allow his shoulders to sink in and reduce pressure, which should help with his shoulder pain.
-Pressure Relief: The combination of high-density foams and a durable base layer will cushion pressure points and improve comfort for both of you.
-Cooling Technology: The breathable materials and Hypergel-infused foam will help regulate temperature and prevent overheating, which is important for your husband.
-Great Value: The Back Science Essentials mattress offers premium features and construction at a very competitive price point.

I encourage you to check out the Back Science Essentials online at www.backscience.com and learn more about its features. You can also reach out to us directly with any questions – we’re always happy to help! Just let us know you’d like customized firmness, and we’ll make sure your side is softer than his.

I hope this helps you find the perfect mattress for you and your husband.

Thanks!
