If "S" brands at Mattress Firm and bed in boxes are not recommended, then what?

I’ve had bad experiences with Mattress Firm with their S brands, so I believe what I hear that they should be avoided. I was thinking of getting a Helix Birch but I’ve also heard bed in boxes are a bad choice, most of the other brands online are beds in boxes (I tried Saatva but it was too hot). A few other stores near me don’t allow returns. Can anyone recommend something outside these options? If I had to choose between an S brand and a bed in a box, which would you recommend?

Hi JBR2022,
I am going give a quick short answer. Helix Birch is a nice mattress. Have no way of telling if it will be good for you. You height, weight, personal preferences, past history of likes and dislikes. All your PPP’s (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences). That is a starting point.

I will make this statement. Some will agree, some will disagree. If you purchase a quality bed in box that has been made to order, meaning, you order it today, they process the order, manufacture your mattress. They compress it, roll it, box it and send it to you and receive it in less than a week. You open it, let it expand as soon as you receive it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this process. Latex is very resilient, it can handle this. Quality pocketed springs without border rods can handle this. Compression springs are meant to do just that, compress. As long as you do not compress them down to their solid state for too long a period of time, you will be just fine. If compressed too long, springs can fatigue. Latex can be compressed and recover to its original state. There are some that will suggest, that dunlop processed latex may not be as responsive over very long periods of compression vs Talalay will respond after longer periods of time.

I own a BinB and it is fantastic for my wife and my needs and preferences, and has shown no signs of fatigue, sagging or any abnormalities after a year of usage.

Once you have provided additional information regarding your body profile and preferences, many of our Trusted Members Manufacturers and Retailers (Our Manufacturer Memberships :: The Mattress Underground) can more precisely evaluate might work best for you. Knowing a price point is also important, but from my perspective, I like to set the issue of price aside for a moment. Finding the mattress that best suits you is the first priority. You will often find that there will be more than one mattress that will be a fit and the prices will range accordingly and most will find something within their budget. You never want to exclude a choice before you have the opportunity to try it.

There are many reasons some of the “S” brands as they are lumped together, lack the luster and quality of yesteryear. They often make it difficult to analyze them by not providing the how/what they are actually constructed from, to lack of transparency of identifying the formulas of each layer (density, ILD’s, spring gauge & turn, diameter to name a few)

In so far as where you look to purchase your selection. I would suggest, look at reviews individuals and their experiences. Understand the Return, Refund, Restocking Fees and Exchange policies before you sign on the dotted line. Not on line at the register where you are exhausted from the search experience and will agree to just about anything to get home. I like getting things in an email, so anytime down the road, you have some back up if needed.

Just because some vendor doesn’t offer a refund and only an exchange, does not make them bad, that is what researching their individual reviews and reputation come in. In our practice, we rarely offer refunds. It is not our policy to do so. We do almost always (some folks you just can not please) make it right. Refunds do not solve the problem, it just sends the issue to someone else.

Look forward to gathering your information to put you in the right direction.
