Ikea mattress - which has better edge support

Hi,

Looking for a low-end inner firm spring mattress but with adequate back and edge support from Ikea store.

Would one that has Bonnell spring (e.g. HASVÅG) turn out to perform better than the indvidual coiled (e.g. HAUGESUND) mattresses for edge support?

I plan to add a firm topper on top of the mattress.

I really need edge suport, so I hesitate to look into any of the foam mattresses.

Hi joebk,

I don’t have any personal experience on either mattress but as far as I can see neither one of them list an edge support system in the description. I would guess that the Bonnell probably has firmer edges but the only way to know whether the edge support in either one of them would be suitable for you would be based on your own careful testing or personal experience.

Both of these mattresses also use 1.5 and 1.7 lb polyfoam in the comfort layers which are lower quality materials that would be a weak link in the mattress that could compromise the durability and useful life of the mattress.

You can see my comments about choosing a firmer mattress first with the intention of adding a softer topper later in post #2 here.

In most cases I would avoid this approach because of the uncertainty involved with making two purchase choices instead of only one and choosing a topper that would be suitable in terms of thickness, firmness, and PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and your own Personal preferences) for a specific person on a specific mattress can sometimes be almost as difficult as choosing a mattress that doesn’t need a topper in the first place. I would generally focus on choosing a mattress that is likely to be a suitable match without a topper (unless you can test the combination in person or you are purchasing both online as a “set” that is designed to work together and they both have a good return/exchange policy) and then use the option to add a topper as a “backup” strategy in case your initial choice is too firm and doesn’t turn out as well as you hoped for rather than a “primary” strategy.

Hi,

Thx for the feedback. I have a firm (65 ILD) topper I am planning to add to.

BTW, I picked up the Haugesund from Ikea. Firm version. But it feels like medium firm. The springs are weak.

I put on the firm topper and that really help the firmness at the top. Although, the spring coils press down quickly – when I sit on the bed. I had a Hanestad before and that was MUCH FIRMER and stronger springs than this one.

I am quite disappointed with the Haugesund mattress, perhaps won’t go to Ikea for firm mattress next time.

I am thinking about a way to strengthen edge support on this bed. Perhaps put a piece of long thin MDF board – along the edges – below the topper? Any suggestion?

Anyone tried DIY attempt on edge support?

There is more about some of the different ways that are used to provide edge support for innerspring mattresses in post #2 here.

Your suggestion about adding a strip of MDF would probably make the edges of the bed “feel” firmer but they could also be quite uncomfortable because you would be firming up the part of the mattress above the spring which is more about pressure relief and “comfort” and it wouldn’t solve the real cause of the lack of edge support when you sit on it which is the deep edge support and edges of the spring itself which would still compress if you sit on them even under a strip of MDF. It may help a little but I don’t know of any realistic way to add good edge support to an innerspring mattress without opening up the mattress and adding some type of edge support to the spring itself.
