There is more about some of the different ways that are used to provide edge support for innerspring mattresses in post #2 here.
Your suggestion about adding a strip of MDF would probably make the edges of the bed “feel” firmer but they could also be quite uncomfortable because you would be firming up the part of the mattress above the spring which is more about pressure relief and “comfort” and it wouldn’t solve the real cause of the lack of edge support when you sit on it which is the deep edge support and edges of the spring itself which would still compress if you sit on them even under a strip of MDF. It may help a little but I don’t know of any realistic way to add good edge support to an innerspring mattress without opening up the mattress and adding some type of edge support to the spring itself.
