Wife an I have loved our Sterns and Foster mattresses for years - but the new ones are basically unrecognizable from the 20yr ago models. (I know bought/sold 3 times over).
Recently we purchased a Serta iComfort 3000 form Mattress Firm. Night 1 - 45 were pretty great for my wife, no back or hip pain - I was comfortable but wished it was a bit firmer. Over the 120 day eval period, it started to soften up - and by the end of 110 days, my wife was back to having hip pain, so we returned it. Now I’m just looking for a solid bed with a firm (but not quite stiff as a board firm) feel. I’d prefer to buy something with longer than 120 day return period so that we can be 100% sure before it’s a permanent decision.
Can anyone recommend a mattress? Budget is not super important, willing to spend for the right bed, but prefer 3k budget.
Also I custom built our bed frame so it’s a solid platform, and we do not need a box spring. Prefer 12 to 14 inch thickness and good edge/corner support. Cooling features are a nice bonus and motion isolation are important. We’re in our 40’s so it should also be good for bedroom activities.

You came to the right place as there are many highly rated and trusted companies here that have great options that may fit your needs! My personal opinion, the density of the foams plays a huge role in the longevity / early “break in period”. Especially in the top quilting which I feel like isn’t talked about enough. You can have a really well built mattress with good quality foams in the comfort layers, but if the top quilting is pretty standard in the mattress industry, this is going to wear out first. Usually when you start to feel like the mattress is softening up, it is usually because of the material inside the top quilting (the quilted foam / the fiber badding).
I looked up the Serta 3000 and it looks like they are using more of a smooth top style which doesn’t really have quilting. So this is concerning to see as this may mean the actual comfort layers of foam started to soften up pretty early in this trial period.
Based on my personal experience, I have noticed a pattern in the way mattresses typically wear out throughout the life of the mattress. We carry many mattresses with all different types of foams. From latex to regular poly foam. Some mattresses are built better than others internally however, it seems like the top quilt usually wears out first.
We have been carrying a line up for a few years now that has been doing really well for us in regards to that “break in / trial period” We carry a line up called the Black Oasis which uses a combination of Latex Foam on the bottom layer and 4 Pound Gel Memory Foam as the top layer. The difference with these models is inside the quilting. We are also quilting or top quilt to the same 4 Pound Gel Memory Foam that is in the comfort layer. This has been been showing great results in keeping it’s original feel for a much longer period of time since it is using the same quality of foam in quilting as in the comfort layers. I have a model in this line up that is what we call a cushion firm. On scale 1-10 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest. I have this as a 3. I have seen people who are extremely sensitive to change when sleeping on mattresses do really well on these models. Because it is quilted to the gel memory foam, most people who like the hybrid smooth top styles tend to like this feel as the gel memory foam layers are on the top and in the top quilting.
However based on where you live, it may not be practical to purchase something like this as you may not be able to drive to the store and try it, and it is not a mattress we rollpack and ship Fedex Ground. Sometimes shipping freight can be expensive. I just wanted to share this model as an experience and emphasize that the quilting on some of the mattresses may be what’s going to give you the most troubles. Luckily for you, you are looking for a firmer mattress which most firmer mattresses are not using a super thick / plush quilt. Smooth Top Mattresses might be a really good option for you as you are eliminating the the quilting. Definitely look into these kind of models with brands here who are trusted!
Another option may be to find a model which has a zippered cover built into it that allows you the access of the inside mattress. This will give you the ability to replace the foam layers down the road instead of getting a whole new mattress. Here we also have the ability to replace your zippered quilted cover with a new one if you decide to go down that route even if it is a mattress bought somewhere else. We carry a zippered mattress that is a wrapped coil with latex foam. It’s more of a medium feel so I think it will be too soft for you personally.
