Almost a year ago I realized why my mattress had become less comfortable and that was that the mattress had sagged and springs were poking through as well. Some months later I realized I could just flip it over so I did. While slightly better, it’s still got bad spots I can’t sleep on and I’m pretty much confined to one side of the bed.

Upon this discovery I was looking up mattresses and found Zinus. Several months go by and here I am. I finally have some money to use towards a new mattress and I’ve been considering all kinds of sites to order from, including Zinus. I’ve seen a lot of dislike here for the company (mostly, if not all from Phoenix). Is this an indication that it’s recommended to avoid Zinus at all costs – no matter the budget? If so, please explain the precise reason.

As for preferences/needs I live in a very hot and humid part of the US so I don’t want a bed that will get really hot. I’ve never had anything but spring beds in my life as far as I know. I’m not opposed to getting something with foam. I don’t really care as long as the new bed is enjoyable.

Aside from the weather I think my preference is side-sleeping since I tend to do that a lot when I’m conscious but when I wake up I’m almost always on my back or side. I’m 6’3" 350 lbs. and looking for a Queen size bed, no compromises on size.

I also need to replace the bedcover because of the holes the springs poked through the old one and I need sheets too. I want to get percale replacements because I really like percale sheets. Finally I need a bed frame, preferably one with storage underneath that can have a mattress set right on top of it. Once again, the selections of metal frames from Zinus are appealing.

With all of that said I have a budget of about $400 (including shipping). I’m okay with having to wait a little bit to slowly collect the funds to purchase the mattress, sheets and frame. After doing some reading I’m also considering a protector.

So far as far as mattresses and frames go, these are the things I’ve done some research on and considering:

I’ve contacted Linenspa which were completely unresponsive. Their website claims they get back to you within 24 hours and it’s been several days. I also contacted them through a twitter private message a few days after that and they haven’t even read it (or have read notifications disabled).

I contacted Zinus in the past and they responded in a day or two but this time it’s been days and they haven’t responded. My last contact with them was to ask about foam density which they claimed was “proprietary” and wouldn’t answer me on. This time it was basically the same question as in this thread.

I contacted Sleep Signature and got a reply from DHP which was very simply “Thank you for contacting us, we suggest a gel memory foam mattress, this type of mattress will keep you cool.”

To be fair I contacted Zinus on Labor Day and Linenspa a few days before that. It’s possible that they haven’t gotten back due to that weekend. Update: I see Linenespa replied on Twitter and they were actually very polite and well-spoken where other companies seemed to have flawed English. Zinus got back to me as well but seems to think that I have one of their products and is asking for pictures, proof of purchase and other information even though I made it clear I was looking to buy.

I contacted Olee and got a reply from DTI talking about foam in mattresses being affected by extreme weather and to allow it 72 hours to expand. I do live in a hot & humid area but I have an AC (it struggles at times). The point for mentioning that was I want to stay cool. I don’t think it’s going to be so hard for the mattress to expand. They said “Our recommended weight capacity is 1500lb.” and that their bed frames should work nicely with any of their mattresses. They also told me about needing L shaped brackets if I buy a rounded edge frame in order to attach a headboard.

So that means so far none of them were able to answer the question which is to recommend a mattress. I followed up with Sleep Signature and Olee just to see where it goes.

Am I looking in the right places or doing something really wrong? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You are looking at a lot of mattresses, and the thing they have in common is I don’t believe any of them are made in the United States. You don’t say that is a concern for you, so I will assume you knew this going in and are fine with imported mattresses. The prices are very appealing, but will they get you what you want? An all foam bed is always going to sleep warmer than latex, or a bed with inner-springs; there just isn’t the air flow with an all foam mattress. Your budget will keep an all latex mattress off your choices, though it would be the most temperature neutral option.
So that leaves an innerspring with comfort layers of foam. The new fabrics talk about cooler feel, but that only lasts for the initial contact. After you have been in bed, the fabric will no longer have the cool feeling. Gel memory foam was developed in response to memory foam sleeping warm, but if you think about it, this was for mattresses like Temperpedic where the layer you actually sleep on is the memory foam. In all foam mattresses, you need to understand what the top layer you are sleeping on is made of. In traditional spring mattresses, there is quilt foam on top which normally is not as warm as memory foam.
Moreover, the mattress protector can impact the temperature of the mattress when you sleep. The more “waterproof” they are, the warmer they will be.
As always, we recommend looking at a companies return policy because when you buy based on price and reviews, it may not always work for you.
The bases look pretty straight forward in terms of structure and design. I didn’t see maximum weight listed (you gave Olee’s maximum), but I am sure the bases are adequate.

To recap

  • Innerspring will be cooler than all foam, and over the life of the mattress more supportive.
  • If you are shopping based on price, then you need to read as many reviews as possible from people who are similar in build to yourself - 6’ 3" and 350 pounds to get a good comparison.
  • Check the comfort guarantee and return policies.
  • Don’t expect exceptional Customer Service and you will never be disappointed.

I realize you are hoping for someone to review your list of mattresses and make a recommendation as to what you should pursue. Unfortunately, that is not what I do. I can point out things to look for and be cautious of, but unless it is a mattress that I personally make, I cannot weigh all of the options better than you can. If it was my mattress, I could give you specifics on density and quality. Most of the online sellers don’t provide this level of information.
I hope this has given a few things to consider when comparing the mattresses.

I always prefer things made in the US but due to budget I can’t be picky right now.

Thanks for all the insight. What you suggested is pretty much what I’ve been doing… Not expecting amazing service, preference for a “sleep trial policy” and reading reviews of people of a similar build (as well as watching YouTube videos).

Every one of the ones I linked are actually beds with springs and foam and that’s due to price and availability. I could only find pure innersprings on this website. Most of them are more expensive than the hybrid beds. I was looking at hybrids as hopefully an option that won’t be really hot like memory foam is notorious for being.

I think I missed your site on the list of sites on here because I don’t recall visiting it.

Now that I look it seems you won’t ship across the country so it’s unfortunately not an option.

Phoenix will tell you that if you have a mattress manufacturer and retailer (like me) in your area, you will find your best value there. It is because we choose the components in our beds; they are not dictated to us. We are here to handle warranty and provide excellent customer service.

I only use 1.8 - 2.5 pound foam in my main mattress line, we use 100% Talalay latex throughout, and when we incorporate memory foam we use 4 pound gel.

I understand your budget, but the more you can put towards the 8 hours a day you spend in bed the better your sleep and your health will be.

I wish you much success in finding a comfortable and supportive sleep system.
