Innerspring differences

I’ve done research and it seems the king size mattress I bought ten years ago is offset innerspring. However, I hardly see any places selling these anymore. And it seems there are three types now

Verticoil

Hingeflex

Luraflex

What’s the difference between these?

This doesn’t even include bonnell and continuous coil which seem to be lower quality

Hinge-flex is an offset coil. Here, the top and bottom of each coil is hinged or offset. Instead of being round, the top and the bottom coils have square edges, and this reduces the motion transfer. That’s why they are better than Verticoil.

Hey slickvik.

Welcome back the Mattress Forum

The mattress industry has largely shifted away from traditional offset coils in favor of individually wrapped pocket coils. This is driven by consumer demand for better motion isolation, which pocket coils handle well, along with strong marketing appeal. Offset coils, while often more durable and supportive, are more expensive to manufacture and assemble, making them less common in today’s market because…you know why.

Most shoppers now prioritize features like pressure relief and motion separation, even if that sometimes comes at the cost of long-term structural support.

You’re absolutely right that the offset coil system in your 10-year-old mattress is becoming rare. Of the remaining offset coil types still available from Leggett & Platt, here’s how they compare:

Hinge-Flex® is the classic offset coil featuring a hinged, squared-off head that flexes to better contour the body. It’s known for delivering firm, durable support with some responsiveness—great for those who prefer structure without too much bounce.
Lura-Flex® is a slightly more flexible open-ended offset design, offering a bit more give and springiness, which can be ideal for sleepers who shift positions often.
VertiCoil® Edge, while not a true offset coil, is a modernized take on the traditional innerspring, with reinforced edge support and a more vertical orientation. It’s typically found in mid-range models and emphasizes durability around the perimeter rather than deep contouring.

In comparison, Bonnell and continuous coils still seen in some “entry-level” mattresses are generally less conforming and supportive over time.

Are you looking for a mattress with offset coils?
