Innerspring+topper/hybrid for ~190-200lb stomach/side sleepers

I think I narrowed down what I want, it’s now just a matter of finding the right mattress.

I am a stomach sleeper, my wife is a side sleeper. I’m not going to say which of us is which weight lol. We have a king size ~15" tall hybrid of unknown brand we bought about 11 years ago. The support/feel is great and there’s no sagging; my only gripe with it is it gets hot.

We have a guest room with a queen bed we want to replace and use for a trial run. It currently has an Amazon Zinus foam mattress that is as hard as a rock. I travel a good bit for work and generally find hotel mattresses to be pretty comfortable. Even the cheap innerspring stuff. So I am open to either a decent innerspring + a topper of my choosing or another hybrid. I am kind of leaning towards the inner spring to be honest. Feel wise I am not looking for something completely cushy and cloudy but I definitely don’t want something super firm either. Definitely want something very breathable with natural materials as well. Budget wise I’d like to stay under $2000… ideally under $1500 honestly.

There is an OMF store up the road- I want to check out their Ovation hybrid mattress and some other offerings but I am liking Arizona Premium Mattress’ off the shelf offerings as well. I tried to call/message today though and got no response. I’m in the Charlotte area so I’m open to check out any local recommendations.

It seems that you have done some homework narrowing things down, and your description is genuinely helpful. One small point that’s worth stressing, and not just mattress nitpicking, is that sleeper weight really is a key variable when professionals try to suggest a good starting point. Even when height, age, and sleep position are known, weight plays a major role in how much someone compresses the comfort layers, how a mattress that feels medium to one person might feel firm or soft to another, and how well the mattress provides pressure relief and long-term support, especially with a mixed stomach and side sleeping setup.

It’s completely understandable not wanting to share exact numbers publicly, but even very broad ranges would make recommendations far more accurate. Since you both are relatively close, it will have more validity for you as the stomach sleeper as we dont want to add any added strain to the back muscles when sleeping should the middle section can sink too much if the mattress does not provide enough support.

OMF crafts some excellent mattresses, many of which reflect a more traditional design philosophy reminiscent of mattresses made 30+ years ago. A mattress, however, is only as strong as its weakest link. While the Ovation’s comfort layers appear to be well constructed, the 3.5 lb memory foam sits just below the commonly recommended 4–5 lb range for viscoelastic foam. Higher-density memory foam is generally more durable and better suited for long-term use. For sleepers approaching the 200 lb weight range, latex may be a more durable option over time.

@Arizona_Premium does offer some great options, and can even create something that targets your specific needs.

As you may know, the more force applied to a foam, the faster it can wear. That’s why it’s important to evaluate a mattress by its components: support, comfort, and cover. Heavier sleepers generally benefit from a firmer, more robust support layer, while the comfort layer and cover can be adjusted to achieve the desired surface feel without compromising overall support.

A mattress with a zippered comfort layer can be a wise choice, allowing you to modify the feel without returning or replacing the entire mattress if it isn’t perfect. For durability and longevity, you might also consider a comfort layer of latex rather than visco foam.

You’re definitely thinking in the right direction, and these considerations should help guide you toward a mattress that balances comfort, support, and durability.

I went ahead and ordered the Arizona Premium hybrid. They won me over with the ability to change the foam topper. I think I spoke to the owner on the phone? He said the medium would make for a good middle ground for my wife and I and obviously if we don’t like it we can swap it out. It will probably arrive early next year so I will report back once we get it and spend some nights on it.
