Is a latex topper new?

Hi, how do I know if a latex topper that I received is new?
I had to return two latex toppers to two different companies. I spent a lot time and money on packing them to return. Will they just send those products to someone else. Could then my latex topper be also used (it looks kind of old)?

This is a great question. Ostensibly, when a mattress topper is returned, it theoretically could be processed back to its base components and that material reused. Since this is both time and cost restrictive, the normal modern practice would be to examine for any stains/damage(which would negate the return, and thus the topper would be discarded as unusable), then to clean and sanitize it if its ‘lightly’ used, to remove any consumer caused detritus and soil, and to make sure no ‘passengers’, i.e insects, are in it for health and safety practices. This should leave a perfectly good and clean topper which can be sold to another consumer.

However…depending on where you purchase the topper, steps can be skipped; if it’s a low cost high volume retailer, it’s hard to say how closely these steps are adhered to, especially if these are shipped from international warehouses. For health reasons, you should not have to worry the topper was not cleaned and sanitized though, as this would shut down a seller very quickly.

So your topper might be a ‘returned’ item, but also it could appear ‘old’ if its been sitting in a warehouse for months or years, as well as how it was stored in the warehouse. Aside from appearance, is it showing signs of wear? Since I have not been involved with the actual processing of returns for any mattress manufacturer, you might want to reach out to one of theTrusted Members of the site who offer latex toppers and have dedicated expert forums here, likeMattress To Go or Latex Mattress Factory, as they can tell you what they do to process returns of latex toppers to fully answer your question.

I hope this helps,
