Is buying an organic mattress really worth it?

Has any expert on this forum done extensive research?
Is an organic mattress really beneficial for preventing a future serious illness?
How toxic can regular mattresses be?

Hi jwblue,

No manufacturer of any (non-medical) consumer goods product, will ever state as a “fact” that their product will “prevent a future serious illness”. In addition to environmental factors, there are way too many other unknowns that can cause illness (such as stress and dis"ease").

Ultimately it is up to the end-user to do research on what is most important to them when using the product, regarding what it is made from and how it performs.

As far as bedding goes, we have always pro-actively stated that bedding is one of the most intimate products you use on a daily basis, so “we” feel it’s an important place to start and to do that research, and whenever possible, eliminate additional (many times unnecessary) ingredients, many of which can be potentially harmful.

Most true organic mattresses contain three ingredients: #1 - organic (or natural) latex rubber-milk, #2 - organic (or natural) wool with no additional fire retardants, and #3 organic cotton fabric (not blended with poly).

There are also some “eco” hybrid mattresses available, which may use organic cotton-poly blends, or wool with the addition of silica, or blended latex, or small amounts of natural latex (2" or 3") on top of coils. For folks looking to create a sleep environment as natural as possible (and want to avoid the additional cost incurred with organic materials), these eco-hybrid mattresses are often a better choice than many conventional mattresses (made from petroleum or memory foams and wrapped in 100% polyester-nylon fabrics), while fitting their budget.

I’m including a few links to articles we have written in the past, which may be helpful to you:

Again, no one can verify that any product will prevent anything in the future. Ultimately it’s your decision on what is most important to you when using that product.

jwblue,

The key word in your second question is “preventing.” A mattress can’t be promised to prevent disease, whether it’s organic not, just as CozyPure mentioned.

It’s also important to note that just because a mattress isn’t “organic” does not mean that it’s toxic. In fact, there’s a retailer around my area that recently got a cease and desist order for some false advertising to that very degree. Organic mattresses have benefits, no doubt, but a blanket statement that a non-organic mattress is automatically toxic is not accurate.

When you’re looking at foam mattresses, make sure that they’re CertiPur certified. This ensures the foam is made without ozone depleters, without PBDEs, Tris flame retardants, without mercury, lead, heavy metals, wihout formaldehyde, witout phthalates, and with VOC emmissions less than 0.5 parts per million, which is a really low amount.

Here’s a list of CertiPur foam mattresses direct from their website: https://certipur.us/list-of-participating-companies/

The most common complaint about usual synthetic mattresses is that they contain a large number of toxins in the form of chemicals, paints, adhesives, etc. Almost all types of synthetic mattresses have such substances. These toxic elements can have a serious negative impact on you and your family, in the long run. Choosing an organic mattress, on the other hand, would protect you from these toxins because eco-mattresses (Admin note: promo/affiliate link removed from here) are relatively safe.

We spend at least one-third of our lives in bed. Why not choose a bed that will not only be convenient but also useful for your health?

The real problem out there Daria91, is the horrible misinformation on the internet, similar to the link you posted above for so-called organic mattresses.

At least nine of the eleven mattresses listed on your link are ANYTHING but organic… just chemical-based gels and foams, the usual conventional mattress components. Somehow these mattresses get listed as the “top organic mattresses” when they’re not even close to using basic “natural” materials. Sadly, a lot of consumers don’t know any better and fall for articles like this… which really is #FAKENEWS

I’m sure you get an affiliate commission when folks click the links you posted, but regardless… you need to do your research before posting wrong information on this site.
