Is the SmartBase Deluxe Mattress Foundation any good?

My spouse and I are extremely overweight (350 lbs and 370 lbs = total of 720 lbs, although it’s slowly going down). We are on the market for a new king size mattress which I will go into detail in another post. We also need a bed frame and we definitely need something sturdy. But for financial reasons we really need something that doesn’t break the bank. We found this SmartBase Deluxe Mattress Foundation on Amazon which seems to have great reviews and will support up to 2,400 lbs. We actually already ordered it as we thought with how much weight it can hold, 5 year warranty and all for $100 it seemed like a great solution. Now that we’ve discovered this website, we’d like some opinions on our purchase. Thanks!.

Hi bluemountain,

It would depend to some degree on which mattress you end up purchasing but you can see some general comments about these types of wire grid platform beds in post #10 here and about the Smartbase in particular in post #3 here.

At the very least I would make sure that it meets the warranty criteria for the mattress you are purchasing but with your weights I would have some concerns about the strength and durability of the Smartbase.

I would echo the concerns listed by Phoenix. Overall this is a lightweight product and the steel is not particularly thick and can be deformed. Some of the weight capacities of these items are misleading, as they relate to a weight evenly distributed over the product, versus a specific weight concentrated over a leg or joint in the frame.

My spouse suggested that because we are planning to buy an innerspring mattress (this has some potential to change, but I’ll get into that when I make a post for the actual mattress) as opposed to memory foam or latex, that a warranty probably won’t apply to us. If that isn’t the case, we will probably change bed frames.

Yes, I noticed it said “evenly distributed” on Amazon as I was making this post. It made me a bit worried.

I’ve brought up my concerns with my spouse, but since it’s been delivered he suggests we just try it out and see what happens. We don’t have a mattress yet though. And I’m not sure how returns will work on Amazon. We’re currently moving but it’s something we have to figure out sooner or later. Thanks for your help.
